The production is a bit iffy. The guitar does consistently feel a bit thin and then there are some moments where the mix gets pretty dry all of a sudden. It's not surprising though, considering that they probably worked with several different engineers and producers to record the album over the course of the past 13 years.

Axl Rose most definitely did. Which is why the production on Chinese Democracy was such a mess.
I think a lot of the music on this album had already been written and recorded years ago, but Maynard took his sweet time to lay down vocals for everything, which led to the band going back and tweaking arrangements.
