Re-listening to this after the glory of Once Twice Melody just confirms that it was, at best, an inventive near-miss. Only Drunk in LA rates among their best songs and it lacks coherence and personality.
Not sure what they did in the 4 years since to rediscover their heart, but they are back. OTM soars.

It's a testimony to Beach House's consistency that each album (maybe not their debut) has heaps of champions ready to defend it's legacy as the band's best - maybe more so than any other band I can think of. But for me, 7 is just okay - I prefer at least 5 other Beach House albums; it lacks memorable tunes and some kind of thread to hold it all together. It certainly doesn't "kick ass" anyway...

Trying to formulate my top 10 beach house songs and it's insanely hard but I think "woo" is my number one

looking back, Once Twice Melody is a huge improvement over this. they really figured out how to go farther with this sound and push it to its limit

OTM was literally just them taking what was good on this and diluting it over double the runtime.

genuinely curious to hear why anyone thinks this is better. when I hear even the best songs on this like Drunk In LA I wish they had that thick lush sound OTM has. sometimes the production here feels a little too flat to bring the more subdued songwriting style to its full potential
