Yeah that right there is not my opinion

As for the Sonic clunkiness of Alligator's lyrics I think that plays well with their content and tone. The rest of their discog is smoother but I don't think that's actually a plus

They speak to me for some reason

the clunkiness is the POINT its more about one liners and the central theme of growing uncomfortably into your adult skin and learning how to separate that world from the youth oriented world

and matts never done anything nearly as brilliant since, though hes gotten a bit better at cohesiveness

I most certainly do, the band do, and so do the record buying public at large...so it's turned out nice again.

lol doof listen to alligator 50x more times idk what to tell you

abel and all the wine demolish this album for me. daughters too omg

this album is like boxer c and b sides mostly. a few incredible songs and mostly some of their most dull stuff ever. but they are a huge grower band with every release so who knows what the take of mine will be 10 listens from now. but ive listened a lot so far with the lyrics in front of me, and idk they are just past the point of making the best music in all of rock imo. at least when it comes to modern day stuff

Their sound is so smooth that it slides in one ear and right out the other. Alligator had variety in spades, something this is sorely lacking

Well yeah doof, and I'm glad you and others dig it. Smoothness has never been a factor that's drawn me to any type of music unless it's paired with some other, jagged or difficult element - be it lyrics, performance, song structure, or production - and increasingly, the nationals music lacks edge because it's all smooth.

I don't much like 'Abel' or 'All the Wine', they're decent, nothing more.

Why do I want to listen to a 35 year old scream 'My mind's not right' over and over again against a backdrop of an indie rock tune that honestly sounds like any other indie rock band? If that was my bag I'd find a band who do that 99% of the time rather than 1% of the time. It's ok as a one off but it never exactly rocked my world. Seems perverse to hold that up as a favourite when it effectively doesn't sound anything like the rest of their output. A 3/5 song for me, maybe 4/5 when I saw it performed live (for comparison the 'metal' version of 'Humiliation' was a 5/5 song at the same gig).

'All the Wine' has funny lyrics but I've always found it a mid placed plodder. 'The System' off the new one rips it a new arsehole according to what my ears are telling me. It was the weakest song in their set when I watched the live too, bit of a damp squib and the audience took it as a beer break tbh. I'd rate it 3.5/5.

Even the guitar licks with a rougher sound are super familiar here

All the Wine legitimately makes the entire rest of their discography sound like shit

Also All the Wine is just perfect lyrically. You can feel the words stumbling around happy-sad drunk as he sings them

Maybe they should write the lyrics down on a greetings card or something to cheer people up - the song itself, the words married to the music, is underwhelming

Agreed about the homogeneity this record has.

Also all the wine is perfect. One of their best

Secret meeting, all the wine, geese, and mr. November are miles ahead of anything here, barring gym and carin.

Toad - 'Smoothness has never been a factor that's drawn me to any type of music unless it's paired with some other, jagged or difficult element'

this does have some difficult elements to it, I'd say it purposefully makes things more uncomfortable for the listener than Alligator which is pretty obvious and inviting sounding.

'Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks' kills the need for 'All the Wine' in a National setlist, that's their best singalong by a country mile

Pretty sure the divide between doof and the rest of us is just that doof doesn't like the musical awkwardness of alligator while the rest of us thinks it makes the album
