I mean at least this makes me glad I cannot stand Camp Cope's music? Hot take but they're one of Australia's most overrated acts right now

Guess wil would agree with you keza lol

I rate camp cope but take issue with the way Georgia goes about a lot of things. Drama seems to always follow her....

They need to change up their sound next record, their latest was already a rehash of similar ideas from the first and suffered slightly because of that.

Yeah like there are things I enjoy about their music, Georgia obviously has a lot of passion in her voice and some excellent lyrics. I just cannot deal with the dawdling directionless song structures and though it's cool they use the bass differently, I just feel it leaves their sound feeling...barren? I'm not sure how to put it, maybe it's just a matter of production etc.

I'd definitely like to see where they go musically now, but yeah this whole situation definitely sours things a little further for me.

imo camp cope fits pretty neatly within the category of songwriting band, so the "sound" of the band is less important than the quality of the songwriting, and the songwriting on the last album was pretty solid.

that said, the "sound" of the last two albums was basically the same and i agree that it'd be super boring if the third album does the same thing in terms of "sound". so i wouldnt say that album two was a rehash of similar "ideas" but a rehash of the same template from the first album. (we talked about this before in a camp cope thread) pretty much every camp cope song is literally just steady drums, chord strummin, vocal melody and melodic bass line. would be cool if they add some effects or different instruments and just play around with sound more. like all georgia does on every song is strum chords. she could play some arpeggios or melodic lines from time to time? just strummin chords is a perfectly valid way of communicating a song but albums are better overall when they got more variation in em.

It does sometimes feel like Georgia is an average acoustic guitarist who decided to do the same thing on the electric and idk how well I feel it works.

Like there are certainly bands who do similar - most of the guitar parts Tom Lanyon (of Ceres) plays are fairly simple like that, but there's enough else going on (and a lead guitar part) that it's more of a backdrop than the meat of the instrumentals.

this approach is called "rhythm guitar"

goddamn shitstorm. i hope that big long post is the end of it and we hear nothing else on the matter but thas probably not gonna happen.

new music incoming tho that should be...interesting. dont know if im gonna be able to enjoy it; literally havent jammed this band since the allegations. similarly i've only listened to brand new maybe like 3 times in the last two years, despite giving science fiction a 4.5 and deja and D&G 5s.

I'm inclined to believe in this case it's a wash between him and her so I'll jam with no guilty consciousness

you can't really lump in Smithies a band who's had "the allegations" in the same way as Brand New - by which I mean enticing an underage girl to share sexual photos is pretty different from some emails getting leaked out of context where Wil says some kind of shitty things.

this whole thing is way too he said/she said for any definitive resolution to come out, but if you believe Wil he's been emotionally abused for more than four years consistently, getting forced out of his scene and his livelihood by nothing more than rumours started by the other party. I fully agree with his paragraph that, even if he said some really fucking dumb things in his emails, people lumping that in with musicians accused of rape or sexual assault is ridiculous and unsubstantiated in any way. that paragraph for reference

"I’d like to mention the commenters and hot-take havers who instantly drop the word ‘emotional’ when talking about this and instead use words like assault, victim and survivor. They use the language of genuine victims of rape and violence to win fights on the internet about me sending angry emails during a terrible break up. The deliberate misuse and hijacking of these words, phrases and sentiments is deeply disrespectful, particularly to other women, and incredibly offensive. But if you went to a festival and said “you shouldn’t book Wil Wagner because he acted like an arsehole over email during a break up in 2016” you’d get a very different reaction than if you said “Wil Wagner assaults women”. Which I don’t do."

again, believe him or don't about the Georgia stuff, I doubt we'll ever know for sure but those words are spot on

everything i've read about this georgia character suggests that she's a cruel and vindictive person so i'm inclined to side with him

obviously true. im not out for blood in the same way i would be if he committed something much more heinous; just sayin as a result of personal feelings and not any conscious decision, my relationship with this band's music has soured a lil. even with a band like brand new, i dont feel strongly negative about jesse as a person (given how much distance we now have from both the allegations and the initial misconduct, particularly if you believe jesse sought help in the meantime as he claimed he did). it's just personally, for both bands, i dont yet feel i can enjoy their music alone in my room in the same way that i used to.

everything i've read about this georgia character suggests that she's a cruel and vindictive person so i'm inclined to side with him

the released emails suggest the same thing about wil, however you slice it. i think rowbro's right that this whole situation is a bit too unclear to make a definitive conclusion on which side is absolutely in the right. so i think it's probably best that we all just move on and let these ppl in this embarrassingly public personal dispute get on with their lives too.

it doesnt affect me in any way. something private became public and they're both accusing each other of being emotionally abusive and whatever else. no way to know who's telling the truth or if they're both assholes. i'll leave it to them to sort it out and keep on jammin away.

I get you dim, just raises my hackles when equate the too. "I haven't jammed The Smith Street Band in a minute due to mixed feelings and nor have I jammed Brand New since the allegations" is fine to me, but "I don't listen to either of these bands because of the allegations" is a false equivalency that makes me uncomfortable. just wanted to put that out there
