Honestly if the drums sounded less gross and overpowering I would listen to this album much more. Just take the final part of Higher, that kick drum alone destroys a lot of the atmosphere of the piece. The last seconds without drumming are much more pleasant. ftr I listen to a personal CD rip with ath-m50x headphones.
"seeing these guys tomorrow night....no doubt it will be a good performance"
Ah man I'm still waiting for them to come back here and make up for the cancelled show of last February

I always thought the production sounds fine on this record. Defiantly a fine breakaway from the whole 'loudness war' they suffered from since their self titled release.
To be fair, though, I'm not much of an audiophile by any means.

Could you explain specifically how it's a breakaway from the loudness war though? The loudness war was about compressing music (taking away dynamic range and high def signal) to make music louder and unnaturally more intense. Compression takes away the natural timbre and dynamics of music.
This album is a perfect example of OVERDOING compression, not the other way around. Yes, the master volume is lower than average, but that's the only possible reason I could think of for calling this album not loud. Master volume is a small factor in terms of the actual problem with the loudness war. Avenged Sevenfold hasn't been innocent of compression in the past either, besides maybe with Sounding the Seventh Trumpet which sounds pretty natural by metal standards. I feel like people who're saying this is somehow fighting against the loudness war is either repeating what they heard from an article or somehow has a better sounding copy of the album.
Maybe I'm completely wrong about the whole loudness thing and this album really is more "pure" or something. If that's the case, I still hate the sound coming from this album. The music is awesome though, and I care so much about trying to get it remastered because the music is legit that good. Like, maybe even 9/10 good IF it sounded better.

I dunno Tranta, the ER4SR's are a slightly bright set of IEM's and are lacking in bass IMO, but I didn't spend too much time with them as they're a mates and I dislike IEM's anyway, the only time it's worth spending money on them is when you're spending 30 quid for ones you can reck at the gym, would much rather spend big cash on a quality set of cans. Also what Dac/amp set up you use also affects things in a big way.
The production on this is really good other than the noticeable (slight) compression going on. I like sound of this, with probably my only complaint is probably the sound of the drums (I think it's the kick drum I have the biggest problem with, but i'm not sure as each song and within songs the sound seems to change), but even then it's good.
