I feel like it's a culmination of his DTP albums, and that's really about it
maybe a couple of his solo albums

his guitar skills, his vocal talent, his ear for amazing guitar tone, unique sense of melody and mood. i don't really listen to devy for zany bullshit for 72 minutes which is what i got and all of the above pretty much got scaled back. i can't name a single track on empath i like from start to finish.
lol yeah we're at definitively opposite ends of this argument. what you call "zany bullshit" I call literally what Devin has been doing for his whole career, and I don't get anything like a "unique sense of melody and mood" from Transcendence - I can't name a single memorable melody from this album that isn't in Truth or the Ween cover, Empath has crazy good melodies popping up all over the place

Empath was hysterically bad to me but I'm gonna give it a lot more listens and reserve full judgement, it is very unique compared to what I usually look for in heavy music

EMPATH is amazing

yeah, glad I'm not the only one who thought of Infinity. I wish he hadn't hyped this up so much as a culmination of all his past albums because like Infinity it feels more like a preview of all the stuff he could go on to do. Like Why? seems to be a preview of that Moth orchestral album he's making, and the bit in Borderlands with Che is hopefully a sneak peek of Casualties 2 etc.

With all due respect Noctus it seems like you're exactly the kind of fan Devy was looking to get rid of with Empath

I thought Transcendence was quite vapid compared to his other works, but don't get me wrong, I love the tracks Stormbending and Higher a lot
|

Transcendence is basically Devy making his "generic prog metal album".
I love this album because it's got some big tooooonz on it. But it's not got much of the personality that I love from Dev.

imma give it another spin tonight but i'm not expecting miracles

I'm a bit torn on the new album, I feel like if he just cut out some of the lol tracks (Sprite, Who) and plugged in some of the better demos, the album would be an easy 4.5. As is, it just feels a bit overindulgent despite some great high points.

I believe he had fun with it tho and actually got songwriting input from the other musicians, for once. All I've heard him say about it was that it was a rewarding experience.

I don't recall digging this one much but I need to give it a listen again. Empath is puzzling, I don't know if I like or dislike it. I think I just miss this guys music when he was on drugs, as shitty as that is to say. And I am getting absolutely sick of hearing Anneke on every goddamn album he writes now.
