Nonsense, genre rating is fine as long as not taken to ridiculous extremes (rating every metal album 1/5 without even listening etc)

It's best to not totally rule out a genre for life anyway, many of the greatest albums transcend genre boundaries

"I think what m4j3stiq is getting at here is that people shouldn't rate albums low if it's not your type of music/genre at all, to at least see and appreciate the general quality of the music without letting your own ''non-educated'' opinion bring down the rating even though the music had no chance of pleasing your senses anyway, because it's not trying to be what you want it to be in the first place."

I do agree with this, personally. But m4j3stiq took much further than I would in indicating that music quality can be measured objectively.

Whispered does a good job of refining m4j3stiq's comments to find some sense. But the issue, as minty highlights well, is that he kept suggesting that music quality can be measured objectively. Additionally, in doing so he insists that those who dislike this must either have inferior musical knowledge and be incorrect, rather than simply having a different opinion on reasonable grounds, or just be hating on it because its not their favoured genre. And he says both of these things without any evidence to support his claims, other than what seems to be a misinterpretation of Doof's comment 'Fuck this shit'

I have a gut feeling some people rate this lower than they actually think it deserves just because they want to bring the rating down and/or they are frustrated that they don't like it as much as everyone else. I think that plays into it whether consciously or subconsciously. I find it hard to see how anyone can really think this is a 2, given that I really can't find a flaw in it. To some extent I agree with a watered-down version of whatever m4j3stiq is saying.

However that is a feeling in my gut, whereas my head knows that it is all subjective, and that somebody who doesn't like this album is no more or less stupid than someone who does, just as someone who likes Nicki Minaj is no more or less stupid than someone who doesn't.

Whatever anyone's ratings are on this site, whether they agree or disagree with my ratings, or with consensus, the one thing I'm sure of is that intelligence has nothing to do with it. Even if there is a correlation between IQ and level of appreciation of alternative music (which there likely is), I do not believe that the two are intrinsically linked in any way, or that "dumb person music" is in any way worse than "smart person music". In fact, there is no reason why the music that is enjoyed by people of lower intelligence should be valued lower than music that is enjoyed by people of higher intelligence.

Also his comments about people blindly copying the opinion of the sites 'big dicks' seem unfounded. From the context it seems that you're referring to Doof as one such influential person, in which case your point falls flat as he has the minority opinion here.

A lot of your points seem to stem from being excessively defensive of your own opinion. Chill out; people have differences of opinion and thats fine. Just because there is a difference of opinion doesn't mean that one side has to be incorrect, they just have a different legitimate view, something your allowed to have in an area as subjective as art. Trying to defend your opinion by concluding those that disagree with you must simply be wrong or musically inept is a frustratingly narrow minded way to deal with such differences.

I think however much someone likes this they have to see that it could be regarded as highly (overly?) polished, that it has vocals that could be regarded gutless/precious/saccharine and that the compositions are an acquired taste as they manage to be both wafty/drifty and choppy/stop-starty.

It's a matter of taste (the objectivity argument again) whether you like that whole style and can stomach the above, and I'd say 90% of this site have listened to enough indie/emo/'post2000progressive' to give this a rating.

Minty - this just isn't that incredible for some listeners, you'll have to accept that.

I accept it, don't worry. I find it hard to see things from the point of view of not appreciating this, but I accept that there are those who have that point of view, for sure. Does that make sense? It's much like how I find it hard to see why highly-educated people in a progressive and developed part of the world would choose to adopt a specific religion in adulthood, but I respect that people like that exist, and I wouldn't assert myself to have a greater understanding of the world than them. Sometimes I'm unable to open my mind enough to be able to see things from somebody else's viewpoint, and that's more a fault of mine than anyone else's, so I'm not about to suggest that my rating is more valid than yours. Hopefully that makes sense.

The album has a 4.24 average, I don't think a few 2/5 votes are really going to dent this album's standing on the site and I'm struggling to think of an album with over 200 votes that totally avoids at least a few 1-2.5 ratings.

Nothing can please everyone

"Music is something to be enjoyed. If an album is enjoyed by you, rate it highly. If an album is not enjoyed by you, give it a low rating."

Honestly I didn't enjoy Jane Doe or In the Aeroplane Over the Sea or The Seer or Sunbather, but I didn't give them low ratings because I know that they're well written albums that simply lie outside my personal taste in music.

But, you know, it's also possible to listen to an album a lot of people like and think, "hmm, this is kinda sloppily written and put together."

This song utilizes some incongruently inserted pseudo attempt at swing! 5.0 classic

In that situation I'd give them a somewhat average rating, like a 2.5 or 3 signifying that I appreciate the record for its musicality/song writing/influence etc but that personally its not for me. I've got a few like that (off the top of my head stuff like Suffocation - Pierced From Within and Black Flag - Nervous Breakdown). I dont think that just because an album isn't to your personal taste or because you dont feel particularly educated in that genre you shouldn't rate it; it wouldn't give an accurate representation of the full spectrum of opinion on a record if only those who loved it rated it.

jesus fucking christ i hate melpomene, the haves have naught and light so much but i love the rest of the album, also love how it unpacks itself and grows from being a gay lil shit tier album after multiple listens in a very naturalistic way. Definitely written very well

Still have multiple gripes and totally understand the criticisms of imitation not mastery, the overbearing quality which just grinds those cynical gears, Casey's homologous vocal delivery and that fucking story which reminds me of every pissweak fantasy book for adolescents

But good album

"You might as well rate albums on, "how much did I like this?". By that logic we'll end up with illiterate idiots toping the charts with nicki minaj songs."

Uhm, that's honestly how people should be fucking rating albums you dunce.
