I mean, I do like the album but I will agree it doesn't play to their strengths at all. Same can be said about the self titled, with shorter/simplified songs.

Solid standalone albums, but there's not much reason to go back to these over any other DT album.

I will say I really loved A Dramatic Turn of Events though. Now THAT was an album that played to their strengths. I am hoping the next one will be more in that vein with longer songs, proggy instrumental passages, epic "storytelling" style lyrics etc. Just cut the ballads down to 1 per album. They used to make great ballads (silent man, spirit, disappear etc) but lately most of them kinda suck...

Shit that's gotta put some eyes on Inside Out for sure. I'll always love that label because Riverside was on it.

Isn't Portnoy's prog-project signed to InsideOut as well?

Before this album, there was always a big debate on which DT album was the worst. Luckily, that was all cleared up once this was released

Everyone likes to shit on their self-titled, but I'd take it over When Dream and Day Unite and Systematic Chaos (and this obviously) any day.

They all suck, but WDaDU has Ytse Jam so that's a plus.

Systematic Chaos is a guilty pleasure of mine. Yeah, it's overlong and super noodly, but the noodling is actually kinda fun to listen to from time to time. Plus, Constant Motion and Dark Eternal Night are pretty sweet

The Astonishing is a Prog Opera. If you don’t enjoy Opera, or don’t get it, don’t listen to it. Don’t come here crying because you didn’t like it or because you miss Portnoy. He left on his own, and it was the best thing that ever happened to this band. He’s been on a midlife crisis for almost 10 years, and if he would have stayed, he would have ended up breaking up the band. I’ve been a fan and a student of their music for more than 22 years and The Astonishing for me is what Dream Theater is all about, which is doing something different.

Most people who don’t like this album are fans of the Dream Theater Portnoy Metal era. This was Dream Theater’s worst time (Systematic Chaos, Silver Linings), when Portnoy made everything about him and there was no room for anything else. For the first time in almost a decade and a half, DT is making music I don’t have to skip tracks to. Glass Prison, Root of all Evil, and Dying Soul were great... But, the rest of that Shattered Fortress was crap forced on by MP.

Sons of Apollo is the perfect example of butthurt MP and Derek Shitrinnian trying to stand out by trying to belittle something that will cast a shadow upon them all their lives. I hope they enjoy MP spitting on the equipment.

And one more thing... before you rip on James LaBrie, I’d like to see anybody commenting here sing 3 hours of DT. If you went to the 25th of Images, you heard what I heard. That man sang the hell out of those songs! To me he will always be the voice of prog.

If you don’t like Dream Theater anymore, just leave it alone and stop crying.
