DM is more "guilty" of it on the surface, but gutturals are just a big part of the sound.

there are a lot of monotonous growlers but there are also some with quite the range, though admittedly the first examples that come to mind for me are akerstache from opeth and hegg from amon amarth, hardly pure dm bands... like you can tell those people have serious technique and control over their voices
and tbh as much as im generally not a fan of modern brutal and tech stuff, i know for a lot of those bands the vocalists at least try to mix up their style

Most of the dm I listen to is pretty similar in the vocal style throughout each album. That's usually my main turn off in dm, too. If I'm not ilikin the harsh vox style and it is pre much the only thing going on, it's gonna be tough for me to get into the album
