I'm bumping my rating because this has held up well. My complaints are still the same, but they don't take away from the fact that this is good and was the right step in direction for them to take after Albatross.

And by, 'good,' I mean excellent, judging by my 4.

two totally different styles, irrelevant comparison

both are solid 4.1-ish territory

Nah the more 'textural' approach they took with this really suits their sound

But then Albatross has the feels, so I can never decide which I prefer overall

how is comparing two albums by the same band "irrelevant" lol...

yeah they are different but Dealer is way more refined

I mean yeah they're the same band, but trying to say one is instrumentally better than the other when they're taking completely different approaches instrumentally is kind of pointless

I suppose that might not be the case if they completely fuck up one of those two styles, but I'd definitely argue they don't

very true good point. I guess I prefer the instrumentation on this album more but I feel like one could def make the argument that their songwriting abilities have improved on this album despite the differences in approaches

I like that this is more focused and refined, but the raw nature of the first album is what gives it the charm that hooked me, idk.

Conor Murphy released this as a solo: http://smidley.bandcamp.com/releases

Great to hear a solo effort that doesn't feel like a band offcut

It's not much, but I bumped up my rating. As indifferent to the album as I am, I still think Night Channels and Three On a Match are beautiful, and even the songs I think are a little weaker, I don't flat out dislike. I see the appeal. I like the atmosphere at least half the time and some of the lyrics are great.
