There are so many choice cuts on here besides the fantastic singles though: Tortoise, Pups to Dust, Be Brave, Shit in your Cut, Sugar Boats, the opener and closer are cool soothing intros and outros.
Art that's pretty much all MM have been doing after M&A anyway, they probably don't have it in them to make albums like their 95-2001 material anymore anyway.

True. I just think people will use their past material as a direct measuring stick for grading this record which I find somewhat disingenuous. Continuing with the Robert De Niro example, would you compare his acting chops today directly against his performances in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Godfather Part II, Brazil, etc? Hell no, but then again his movies lately have been shite.

I think it is pretty close to impossible for these guys to make 'run-of-the-mill indie rock songs.' MM are great songwriters and to lump them in with countless bands for the sake of justifying your displeasure with their most recent offering is a shame and, if I'm being frank, a terrible position.
MM at their absolute worst are consistently unique enough that they deserve better; they are not your standard indie rock band.

Agreed with dbizzles, this band is still very unique and eclectic even with their weakest material. Not everyone has to love this like I do, but I definitely disagree with lumping Modest Mouse with middle-of-the-road indie.

Good News is a pretty solid album. Ocean Breathes Salty is such a jam.

The pacing is dire on this album though - let it build momentum by putting Ground Walks straight after lampshades. Urgh, I really believe that's where more than half the problem lies with this
Shit in Your Cut at track 3? Pistol at track 4? Ansel at track 5? The first 5 or 6 songs should all be fire
1. strangers 2. lampshades 3. ground walks 4. pups 5. wicked campaign 6. coyotes
I swear drop the four worst songs and open with that track order and everyone would be twice as happy

still can't stand that album cover

Quirkiest? Compare that to Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and Portugal. the Man. Most good bands are quirky as hell.

This album gets shit on too much. I always shuffle it because I don't care for the track order either, but there are so many great mm songs here.

Agreed, though nothing about this really bothers me. I even like Pistol a lot. There's just some underwhelming material here, but most of it is fantastic. Nothing really like The Stars are Projectors or Spitting Venom though unfortunately, it's like Good News in that way.
