You guys may have a point, however, correlation does not equal causation, and to be honest I had no issue slapping a 4.0 on an album with a 2.5 review rating.

"Also the first agalloch album to never reach 4 avg."

This shouldn't come as a surprise though. From the ultra polished post rocky Ashes to the recorded-on-tape black metal tinged Marrow, there was a pretty drastic departure from the PF, Mantle, Ashes, roll they were on. The fact that it was more polarizing makes sense with the stylistic shift in music and production.

Personally, I find Serpent to have really lazy songwriting. Almost sounds like an Agalloch cover band at times.

I am very excited for what Khorada will bring to the table. I found Pillorian to be a bore.

Serpent is well-done and has its moments (e.g. Plateau of Ages) but it honestly doesn't feel as much like a whole world of its own as the others do

@Dungeon - makes sense

I was certainly a little surprised by the sound on Marrow.

Going from Ashes to Marrow was the most jarring shit ever.

It's jarring but as you get used to it you learn to appreciate Marrow for what it is

But if you're preconception of the album is negative you might not give it that chance (as opposed to if it had been positive). But anyway, it's nice to see that a lot of people did warm up to it eventually and even somewhat to Serpent as well

Sampling a bit of the remastered CD right now and holy hell is it ever good. This is exactly what I've always wanted this album to sound like.

I can't speak to the quality of the other remasters (they haven't arrived in the mail yet) but this remaster is pretty fucking juicy. The guitar tone is better, the mix is clearer, the drums are punchier, basically everything you could possibly complain about in the original's production is fixed. It rules. Buy it.
