I don't know why but even though I generally dislike black metal and I'm not even particularly fond of the Panopticon stuff I've heard, I'm always mildly interested in checking out a new Panopticon release.

I'd hardly call the new album black metal.
It's definitely got more influence from folk metal and melodic death metal.

"Panopticon is a one-man atmospheric black metal band from Louisville, Kentucky, United States of America which holds anarchist beliefs"

if you're talking about the sputnik description, it is painfully out of date. if you want to get into austin's mind as it is currently, read the interview linked in this thread

here it is again: http://decibelmagazine.com/blog/2015/9/1/exclusive-interview-austin-lunn-of-panopticon

doesn't even live in kentucky anymore

he's well-known for being an anarchist and he's from Kentucky... pretty straightforward description. He's moved away from anarchist-themed music on this most recent two records, though.

i'd go as far as saying that as far back as kentucky, he has largely abandoned the anarchist themes and focused on more introspective, scandinavian and nature based topics

lots of this is touched on in that interview

not directly anarchism-endorsing, but you if you know his political beliefs you can kinda tell that's where the politics of the album came from.
