can you detect sections of songs in this album which are phenomenal and really stand out and is not like something they've already done before? nope

can you spot a song which doesn't have the exact same atmosphere as all the other songs on the album? nope (similar is completely fine, but they all have the exact same background feel to them)

Some moments are boring indeed but a shitoad of it isn't imo. And I dig the fact that the album has a similar vibe throughout. It's the most coherent album they've put out since Train of Thought in my opinion.

As a DT album, which in short is supposed to show instrumental wizardry, I think the album succeeds: there are some quite awesome moments here and there. But as a prog album with musical coherence and great lyrics, DT have never been there (except for Scenes from a memory which will remain their greatest effort 'til they get too arthritic to play). So it's good for what fans want a DT album to be. Just don't expect too much amazement.

Is it just me or would this album be miles better if they had better keys parts? Like if they got Tony Banks from Genesis to write the keys on this it would sound much better.

No it's not just you, a lot of the keyboard parts on here are really bad. Rudess has pretty much sucked since Scenes From A Memory.

I personally think Jordan is the band's weakest link. By miles. For example, at 4:00 of even their single, The Enemy Inside, there's a really cool bridge, only to be ruined by Jordan's clowny keyboards at 4:45. I mean, I was really getting into the bridge and Jordan just destroys the mood with his stupid keyboard parts. And that's just only one song. He keeps trying to prove there's a keyboard player in the band when it's completely unnecessary to do that.

Disagree. He has quite a lot of presence on TOT but his parts are more interesting. His

contributions are good most of the time, he's so low in the mix normally that you can't really

appreciate his parts. He's brought to the fore during the instrumental wankery bits and thats what

he's most remembered for.



But yeah he's done the circus keyboard parts way too often now. Everyone in the band is reusing the

same crappy ideas. The orchestral part was refreshing and I'm sure that was JR completely



Check out his keyboard parts in The great debate, they are fucking fantastic especially during the

first verse.

Weakest link is LaBrie, no offense to the man, but that's been generally accepted since Scenes.



Dream Theater's musicians are going to continue this repetition if they continue to release giant

tracks with excessive noodliness, and release albums bi-yearly. Rudess is highly skilled, even if his

typical approach is to play random scales in between the notes/chords required for a melody.

Remember this fucking shit?!!!! This version has JR higher in the mix so you can hear his tasty parts.

The circus sounds are very very good here. Fucking love the melody at 3:46 and the fucking piano solo

at 4:21 is so fucking delicious.
