When we talk of returning to form for a band like Queensryche, we would expect the likes of the progressive metal that they produced in the eighties and early nineties. With this album, we get a bunch of three and a half minute bullets for an album that barely reaches 35 minutes. The music on here sounds good at times, but Queensryche simply doesn't have any songwriters that can sustain a long haul.

I definitely agree with some of what you're saying, Titan. I don't think this is so much of a return to form as it is a renewed energy and vision. No, this is not the Queesnryche that we grew up with and love, but it is pretty damn good. As far as those bullets go, they do hit hard though. Think about "I Don't Believe in Love", "Breaking the Silence", and "Revolution Calling". Those songs were in the mid four minute range. Not much longer than the songs on this album, at least not enough to make a big deal about. Granted, I am not trying to compare those classics with the songs on this album; I'm just saying that I really enjoy where Scott, Eddie, and Michael have taken this band.

Yeah but it's a bit different when those songs are on a concept record that can be considered 2 very long longs in itself. I agree with you regarding Scott, Michael, and Eddie as they truly are super nice dudes. I hope it works out well, for them.

Titan, they do seem like nice dudes and I wish them well, too. You know, I new to this forum and I have to say, after reading Blabbermouth for news about every day and seeing all the comments there, this site is so refreshing. People here seem to be kind and open minded and can actually discuss things without getting all but hurt. Thanks for talking to me, man. Also, did you ever check out the Slave to the System album with Scott on drums. It also had Kelly Gray on it, but that's beside the point. Damon Johnson playing guitar and singing, too. That was a rocking record. If you haven't checked it out, give it a shot. It was nice to see Scott doing some hard rocking stuff back when Queensryche were putting out sub par (to say the least) albums.

No I haven't heard it but will definitely check it out based on your recommendation, thanks.

This site is different than Blabbermouth in that it is much more personable. Blabbermouth is pretty much posting one comment and done, then on to the next article. Here, you have conversations like we are right now. Sputnik is pretty much useless when it comes to news though.

There's two versions of the Slave to the System album. They originally released it on their website back in about 2002, I think. About four or five years back, they secured a record deal for it and added a few songs to it. Kelly Gray sings a few of the songs, but Damon sings the majority. On the re-release with the new songs, Kelly sounds like Chris Cornell, but it sounds like they did some vocal doctoring for him. Other than that, if you like Brother Cane, check this out. Also, the bass player from Brother Cane plays on the album. It was basically 50% Brother Cane and 50% Queensryche (as it was released around the time Kelly was in Queensryche. But the album doesn't sound anything like Queensryche. It does have a Brother Cane feel though. Good stuff.

Underflow, I happen to be one of those who didn't care so much for Promised Land. There were some good songs, but the album just seemed off balance. I like it OK, but it's a rarity that I'll spin it. When going through my Queensryche catalog, I find myself skipping it for Mindcrime (of course), The Warning, or Empire. I was surprised to read the court documents from the band members that stated there were troubles during those recordings. Maybe that's why the album was a bit of a disappointment for me personally. It sounds like they weren't all on the same page.

Promised Land might be my favorite QR, when I'm not spinning Mindcrime.

Yeah, that's a top five all time album there. Regarding Promised Land, it's always struck me as the most mature and emotionally draining Queensryche album. Songs like Promised Land just destroy me.
