Im not much into Hip Hop growers. For me its a genre that either grabs me right away or I hate it.

Nah man I dont like the club stuff either lol. Im a 90s guy. Gangsta rap, Wu-tang, Outkast, Pac, Biggie, Atmosphere, Roots, Scarface, Dre, Snoop, NAS, Jigga, etc. Thats my shizz. I dont like the weird shit like this, Dr Octagon, and MF Doom.

Wow. I have to say that I was shocked and delighted to find a 27 page thread on this album. Hope this gets read because I’m about to spend a good chunk of time writing it. I always miss out on these music discussions because I’m always behind the curve, but I don’t know how in the world I missed this one. I swear Digable Planets’ wiki page only recently added the mention of Shabazz Palaces. Ish has been my favorite MC since I first heard DP 13 years ago. Great voice, great catchy flows and lyrics.
So obviously I’m biased, and loved that the review referenced all of the previous work. The fourth paragraph made perfect sense to me. When the Cherrywine album came out, I was a little disappointed at first, but I soon realized it was better than I thought, I just wished for a little more rapping. Black Up, though, exceeds every hope I ever had. For all the talk about it being ahead of its time, I actually think a lot of it sounds like it could’ve been on Blowout Comb, with more traditional structure and Ladybug and Doodlebug of course. His flow definitely hasn’t changed all that much, which I was very happy about since BC is my favorite hip-hop album.
“free press and curl” is just ridiculous, probably the most left-field sounding one, and maybe his best track ever. I was grinning ear to ear like the first ten times I listened to it. Really the first four tracks are all home runs. And yeah, “King’s clothes” is way too short.

I haven’t been this excited about new (to me) music since I first heard bands like Animal Collective and of Montreal and Menomena (though I was early on them) a few years ago. This is up there with all of them, one of my favorite albums since 2000.
A comment I found interesting was about him being against white suburbia exploiting hip-hop (or something like that). I always wondered what Black Power Ish thought about all the lily white ass fans like me.
The one guy criticizing the lyrics, I would ask whose rap lyrics actually ‘mean’ anything. Or any lyrics at all for that matter. Good lyrics convey emotion in cleverly worded ways, and he gets his share of social jabs in. Shit, the most repeated phrase on the internets from this album, “It’s a feeling,” says it flat out. But for all the great verses, one of my favorite moments is, “I want to be in there. I wish that I was there…” just saying over and over how much he loves pussy.
Last thing, on “free press and curl” he says, “I lost the best beat that I had.” I wonder if he’s referring to the solo album (I think) he recorded in he late 90s that never got released? When I heard about that years after the fact, it killed me to know he had a whole album of material that I’d never get to hear.
