It's true - AF arrived fully formed here and while I think their next two albums are amazing in their own rights they don't match and it unfortunately appears they'll not approach this level again. The National took a few albums to really hit their stride and now they've mastered their craft and show no sign of weakening drastically any time soon.

This album rules. Nothing else they have done has piqued my interest. I've heard some songs here and there, but never spent a lot of time with any of their other albums, tbh.

I probably wouldn't have given this a fair shot but I got it for $2 on amazon one day and it surprised me.

Butcher - this album has/had something, I agree it is a little histrionic and stage-y but I think they make it work on this one

Neon Bible brought them back to earth with a bump though, terrible follow up. Very amateur and not endearingly so

The National has never and will probably never peak significantly

Arcade Fire peaked from their beginning and have never lost steam

It's weird how subjectivity works, eh

I hate the reverb effects on the dude's vocals on neon bible, the echoyness is insufferable

edit - actually, upon relistening, they sound about the same as they do here.

Doofus - yea i may be biased.. i was working in a bar in montreal when the canadian indie explosion hit full-on.. at the same time, i can't relate to the music at all.. the national continue what bands like tindersticks and silver jews and beat happening did so well.. i can relate to that..

Damn late to respond to Raz's reverb comment but the band recorded Neon Bible in a church that they bought so I think it's much more natural there than it is here

Pat continues to prove himself as a total legend. I've always felt the same, bunch of wankers with fiddles.
