It took a while for Alligator and Boxer to become classics for me. I definitely thought they were good, but after a while, I loved them. High Violet doesn't feel like a classic to me, but hopefully it will after a few more listens.

i haven't listened to this more than twice
i mean i like it a lot, so much so that the national may become one of my favorite bands, but i'm just not ready for that kind of commitment just yet

Bumped. Too much good stuff to ignore. This is overtaking Boxer.

'Alligator and Boxer were perfect examples of two different stages in life. Alligator was so young and so impulsive but there was doubt looming underneath, like the band knew there was more to everything but they were afraid to find out. There was the sense that the end of carelessness was constantly creeping up behind them and they were just barely able to keep fending it off. Boxer was the beginning of adulthood and responsibility, of recognizing what was left behind and trying not to be bitter because of it. There was nostalgia but it was somewhat jaded; it gave further weight to Alligator's allegations that they secretly hated that sort of careless lifestyle. High Violet moves completely beyond any sort of youthful folly; it's not so much a new era for The National as it is the next natural step that their music would take. The overall sound isn't too different - the music is still pure National - but as with all of their previous albums, there's a wholly different attitude that sets it apart from everything else they've done.'
Love this style of paragraph.

Boxer was really enjoyable, but this is intolerably boring. I appreciate delicate and subtle orchestrations and what have you, but they don't help to give the album the emotional or visceral kick I think it needs. It's just so languid.

this is really really good but not 5 good. I haven't even been quite able to 5 Boxer or Alligator yet.. but they're both pretty close.

oh yeah and sad songs is great too. Boxer is the best album by the band, the songwriting is amazing, no bad songs so its consistent, diverse, and, the arrangements are amazing. The only thing that Alligator has on Boxer is that it has some heavy indie rock songs and it's mellow tunes, but with how good Boxer is, it doesn't even matter. Also, while Alligator is still excellent, I feel that it has like 3 or 4 awful songs, while the rest are amazing. Rid of those, and it's better than High Violet, but since it has those songs, I rank The National Boxer>Alligator>Violet>Sad songs>all the other stuff. Keep listening, best band in indie anyway.

I'd say they're up there for my favorite band in the genre, with Minus the Bear and (if you count them) Gaslight and Brand New.
