The beginning of this always sounded eerily similar to the opening riff of Time by Anthrax to me

You're definitely right about that second part... no matter how many djent bands try to emulate them, lol

Ngl, I've really come around on this band over the last decade. I used to dislike them quite a bit because of the repetition and what I perceived to be a purely emotionless and robotic take on prog metal. But if anything, those polyrhythms and repetitive riffs are the entire appeal; kinda like with a minimalist composer such as Philip Glass, it's all about paying attention to the subtle shifts that go on in each verse and solo part. And that's where the avant-garde and experimental elements of their work really come from. I'm still not sold on djent as a whole, but I really respect and love Meshuggah these days in a way that I never used to

Phillip Glass is a ‘composer’ in the same way that a 6 year old finger painting is an ‘artist’, that is, with no talent but very proud of the quality of their work

this band only plays, like, 5 notes! they should continually sweep up and down their guitars like they're jerking them off - then it's good music
