Main riff in Motherland Ostenvegr is legitimately one of the greatest BM melodies of all time.

"its not like stalin fought germany out of the goodness of his heart lol
lest we forget the ribbentrop-molotov pact"
interestingly, I learned recently that there is a group of russian historians and eastern european politicians who believe that stalin was preparing for an offensive attack in 1941, which prompted hitler to try and pre-empt it. associated with that idea is that stalin helped support germany's early mobilization and brinksmanship in hopes of bogging down the western european powers in war so that he could attack from behind
my understanding is that most western historians disagree but there are some russian and israeli historians who believe this. not being a historian, I have no way of knowing who might be correct, but it was some interesting reading regardless - just goes to show how hard it is to know what's truth and what's fiction. and its an example of how these east euro bands might have a different conception of the history of the last 100 years that resolves the apparent paradox of being a russian or ukrainian nazi in their minds anyways

there should be absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that stalin had planned and begun war preparations way in advance, or that barbarossa was an attempt to catch him off guard. thank you for sharing though, didn't realise this wasn't common knowledge
to your last point, i think you're giving ignorant nationalist fucks too much credit
i can tell you from my whole life's experience that eastern europe is rife with the same kind of knuckle dragging """patriotism""" you see in the bible belt in the us and in pretty much any undereducated impoverished place

yeah it definitely wasn't taught to me that way in school, it was taught as purely german aggression, with commentary about how inexplicable and suicidal it was
as for the latter, i'm sure you're right, and i'm not claiming that these dudes are academics sitting around looking at primary sources for historical revision lol. just maybe they were raised with a different origin story for the world they live in than we were, which might explain why they do things that seem inexplicable to many of us. there are people I disagree with that I can understand, but I never understood the east euro nazi phenomonon given how destructive the war was

I know there are Russian nationalists out there who claim that the "Russian mafia" as we know in the West is actually not "Russian"
Instead they put the blame for what the Western media always describes as the "Russian mafia" on organized crime perpetrated by Georgians, Chechens, Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Yazidis and - above all - Jews (who they say are mostly from Ukraine and not from Russia)

Conversation above was interesting. Had no idea there was nazi ties here tbh. Remember this being pretty good though. Gonna have to jam again

aaaah i forgot to respond last time
yeah, what thalassic is saying fits very well with my experience. i do want to add just in case my other posts weren't clear enough, when i mentioned mafia what i meant was that putin and his cronies run the state itself kind of like a mafia, with a thin veneer of democracy and such. where else do you see journalists assassinated at the same rates? the scary difference compared to other similar countries is that a lot of people genuinely support him. tbh privatisation in general post-collapse of the iron curtain has been far from the free market dream americans probably envision it as, opportunists concentrated a lot of the power anyway but thats sort of tangential...
of course, the kind of corruption i'm talking about can be found in many other places as well, i happen to know latin america and south east asia are kind of similar. but in the eastern bloc a big difference was that opportunists could simply take over the power structures left over from communist authoritarian regimes without changing a whole lot, while making it seem as if things were different to the outside world

Are there any developments or at least ideas + desire for a second album of Walknut (or its spiritual successor)?
Stringsskald: There are. All in due time...
