Hard band to get into, agreed. Maybe it's not even a bad idea to work your way through their discog backwards, starting with their latest.

That's a good mindset to have, Flug. It can be kind of disheartening to show up to an album that seems lauded by a lot of people and not be into it. Like, what am I missing? Voivod didn't take very much to click for me though. Rob Marton, the Discordance Axis guitarist, mentioned they were a big influence on his playing, and that made me check it out cause I thought the chords in Discordance Axis's stuff were so out there and striking this perfect balance between ugly and beautiful. When I checked this stuff out, it was so alien and bizarre but it made an immediate sense too. But I'd been into progressive music with odd harmony for years prior.

"ill be honest this band has to be one of the least approachable jams ive ever tried to get into, like there is almost no catchyness to hang onto on here."
That's absolutely fair. It took a really long time for Voivod to click with me, and when I was getting into prog metal as a teenager, I couldn't remotely see what others did in these guys. Thankfully, everything DID eventually click later down the line, and now I absolutely adore the band's abstract, experimental approach to thrash. Not even sure how it happened; I guess I just revisited this and Killing Technology one day, and it all came together somehow

I'd take Coroner or Voivod over any of the Big 4. This weirdo shit is the best kind of thrash, easy. Next would be first wave bm.

The idea that this has almost no catchiness is something I can't agree with, personally

I jammed the first two songs on a walk through the woods again today and I already enjoyed it a ton more than yesterday.

Yeah this was easy to enjoy but difficult to love, from memory
Maybe different now 🤷🏻… Killing Tech is my fave

This may just be me but this sounds like proto-mathcore, or at least in moments.

They apparently took a lot of inspo from the hardcore punk and crossover thrash of the era. Mathcore could truly never though.
