London Calling is still calling 40 years on, wants its sound back
I mean, this is where The Libertines come from! Despite the ska movement dating back to the late 70s, the whole album sounds as fresh as a butterfly born today!
This is punk, but is also beyond punk - you also get ska, dub, new wave (you'd mistake Spanish Bombs or Lost In The Supermarket for a track by a modern indie rock band), a dash of soul, rhythm'n'blues, rock'n'roll... HELL, Boyo's intro sounds like britpop! And, while, say, The Damned or The Ramones records sounded cheap, and The Sex Pistols' records made raw sound solid, The Clash made punk a form of high art.

London Calling is sprayed on a wall near the Calais jungle which just about says the lot. Having said that I also hear tales of tdag carved into the side of transport lorries

no idea how i could think this was a masterpiece. adr is 100% right, this is a "pretty cool pop album" and nothing more

It's totally fine if you don't think this is a masterpiece, but "nothing more" statement is just incorrect. London Calling is more than pop music being played . Listen to the record again, the music speaks for itself. Reggae, Pop, Ska, Rockabilly, R&B, Jazz, and rock combined. If people can only muster up the thought of this being just a "pretty cool pop album"they have no soul and it's a damn shame.

it certainly comes in a lot of flavours (jazz though? where?) but it's still all very poppy. not that there's anything wrong with pop music

Jimmy Jazz for starters. No, there isn't anything wrong with pop music when it sounds great, but the Nothing more bit about this record is bull shit to me no offense lol

For a 'cool pop album' this obliterates the majority of punk pretenders.
Hateful
Clampdown
Guns of Brixton
Death or Glory
each of them tunes is pure fire.

The fact that people are dismissing this album's importance in music in general is both disturbing and depressing
