I found this album a little uninspired, actually. My biggest fear is that two lineup changes would hurt the band, but I thought they played magnificently together. It's just that the compositions were weak. They were long but unlike older Opeth songs they just kind of unraveled halfway through. I've been meaning to review it for ProgArchives but I keep listening to it hoping it will click (I'm stubborn like that and dammit they are Opeth).

Yeah, it does seem like they take the songs in different directions that at first may seem out of place, but I find it all very refreshing actually. I think I said this before but it actually feels to me like many of Opeth's transitions before were done for the sake of the effect of switching from soft to heavy an vice versa whereas here the transitions seem more purposeful, they just make more sense.

But really I barely know what the hell I'm talking about, but keep spinning it, took me like 20 listens of Still Life to get the awesomeness.

It took me like 30 listens to even GET Deliverance and about 20 listens to like Still Life.

I dunno. I liked Opeth out of the gate, which surprised me cause I'm not a fan of death vocals nor I am easily impressed with "I'm heavy-whoop now I'm soft" song "progression." But damned if they aren't the best metal band of modern times.

It's funny though, I rail against this album's unfocused, uneven style switches when my favorite song from the album so far is "The Lotus Eater" which is the biggest offender in terms of random genre changes.

tbh I've never given Damnation and Deliverance the attention they deserve. Should probably do that.

Tis what Opeth does best my friend. Get inside your head and linger there.

You magnificant double posting bastard.

I feel the changes within the album are the reason why it's so good, it can transverse from soft to hard without ever sound odd. It's so sparse and lush, like the grass in the mist of summer time. Heavily ambient and fresh. It twists from a violent storm and a cold spring breeze. It's quite brilliant it is.

Should that be a sound off?^.

I didn't care for those and despite Watershed's unevenness I'd still put it above both. I just hate it when a band takes a unique sound and splits it into two separate sounds that are generic. I thought Damnation and Deliverance served only for Mikael to see what parts of both aspects of his sound he was best at, only to combine them to make one killer album, Ghost Reveries. I have a similar opinion of Ayreon's Universal Migrator albums and the subsequent The Human Equation.

and both are much better than Watershed. Deliverance is probably my third favorite from Opeth, with Still Life and BWP as first and second.

I've listened to alot of Opeth... and I was pretty stoked when I heard they were releasing a new album. I genuinely do enjoy the musicianship that is in this album. It may not be their 'best works' but I think it most definitley superb! Especially "Heir Apparent" - "Coil" and "Burden"
