I actually agree with DirEnRefused on this. I've never liked De-loused as much as most people. I'm not really sure what it has to offer that's better than Frances or this.
I understand some people just didn't like their sound here, and some people can't handle the ambient sections on Frances, but I feel like the non-ambient parts on Frances absolutely destroy De-Loused, and whether or not it's overall a worse album because of what some people would call it's pretentious nature, I don't see how people can give De-loused the acclaim they do when comparing it to Frances.
Not hating though, De-loused is still a great album. I've just always been frustrated that I don't seem to like it as much as most people because (especially recently) I fucking love TMV.

TMobotron, I think a lot of people (including me) like De-Loused better because of the concept. Following the story of somebody who attempted suicide and exploring his dreams while in a coma is more gripping than a fictitious tale of a multi-personality male prostitute who kills people with his "ice pick" by giving them AIDS. Plus I personally like the music better there.
And pretentious is kind of a dumb word thrown around by reviewers who, ironically enough, are very pretentious themselves. It could just as easily be substituted with creative or ambitious and have positive connotations.
