Well, not extremely sleeper.

"Mezzanine entered the UK Albums Chart at number one, and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) on 4 September 1998" -wikipedia

Eg that's record sales, I was talking about the critical reaction.

It wasn't universally panned but there were a fair few middling reviews.

The UK press still think 'Blue Lines' is better/more iconic/more influential and this is so different it was initially misunderstood. Q did 'albums of the 90's' this month and Maxinquaye is no.2, Blue Lines is about no.10-20 and this is below 80.

I remember this came out and I did think 'Del Naja's been listening to Climbing Up the Walls' off Ok Computer even more than me'. I think coming so soon after Ok Computer it didn't blow anyone away

Black Milk is one of the best songs on this. Reviewer doesn't know what they're talking about.

I was in Smiths today and the cover of Q caught me eye. Good to see Ladies and Gents was so high but they were taking the piss with a few of 'em.

Zak Portishead s/t was the album that carried out that 'downer' function for me, that one came with a free leaflet for the Samaritans

Angel is incredibly nostalgic for me. i used to hear it on an Adidas commercial featuring Beckham and Zidanne back during world cup 98. takes me back to those lovely times
