The thing with a lot of 80s production is they were just starting to use digital equipment and I feel they went overboard a lot of the time, I'm sure it sounded great at the time (though I bet stuff like this was intended as a sort of alternative to the gloss of other stuff) but it often results in stuff sounding really dated today.

You don't jam noise rock that much boney right?

it doesnt sound as dated really since a lot of current pop rips off the 80s hard

ye ye I wonder if the same will be said with today's production trends honestly...lots of stuff nowadays is very glossy, def a particular style. we will see if it holds up

2020s are gonna see a major backlash against heavy reverb and all things "ambient" I think

It's pretty easy to tell the difference between recent stuff that's actively trying to copy 80s production and the actual stuff - for me though the modern stuff still usually sounds better.
Hovse I get the appeal of the lo-fi production in stuff like this but I don't think this is a particularly good case of that - in general I prefer lo-fi when it's done of necessity rather than for aesthetic. I'm not sure what was the case with this album though.

Con the difference is that we've now refined the technology they were using in the 80s so I don't think we'll have the same issue with modern stuff 30 years on from now.

I hope we do otherwise things are gonna stagnate even more than they already have

you're seeing already w the popularity of lo fi/intentionally bad production in soundcloud rap

Sounds awful

yeah but that's where its headed, you basically have to intentionally do things the wrong way because the technology is so advanced and accessible now

its a production choice like anything else by this point

I mean in theory you should want your stuff to sound as good as it possibly can, that's why I don't get the point of intentionally bad production - I feel a lot of the time it's supposed to signify a greater level of authenticity but the irony is that if you're actively trying to sound authentic then it's not exactly authentic is it?

its a stylistic choice, loads of people prefer raw production, otherwise shit like black metal wouldn't even have a fanbase
