Lol. Guys, it's okay for him to not like it. Shit, I know I didn't like Tool when I first heard them, which was probably this album.

I said I'd almost certainly 3 it based off having heard listened to about half the album intermittently over ten years, which gave me a pretty strong sense of how I was likely to feel if I heard it in full. Turned out that feeling is correct, although the tracks I'd heard definitely work better in sequence and I'll concede that it wasn't quite as deserving of that Pitchfork satire as I expected

End of the day, this is great at what it sets out to be - almost full marks for execution. Their sound just strikes me as pretentious and unnecessarily austere but hey, don't let that ruin your day. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me

Hmmmm is "austere" is the word you might enjoy Aenima more actually, they take it far less seriously on that one. I just like them more when they play it straight haha

Mmm I remember digging the Aenima t/t and Jimmy the most from all their stuff when I tried to get into them back in the day - will give it a crack in a couple days

You think its pretentious cause you approached it on mocking mode. Just because its a bit more serious/ commited listen doesn t make it pretentious. Parabol to Parabola makes this a better 3.5 than half of yours, mine and (off course) any Alter Bridges of this World. It was 2001 and I've listened to plenty of music since then and sure learned not to deify Tool as I did back then. And I know its not cool to be Tool these days but common siiir x) cheers

Not really, I tried to take it seriously and wasn't fully convinced. Never bought into Tool's mystique or profundity, which doesn't help, but I wouldn't have bothered listening if it was going to with a flippant attitude

Haha please not this game - yes this is probably 'objectively' a better album than several of my 3.5s (although plenty worse than some of them), but the reasons I rate albums are never going to be fully consistent as far as personal preference is concerned.
