Lemonworld >>>>>>>>>>> Sorrow agreed
|

Not sure I’d place Lemonworld over Sorrow but it’s definitely top 3 on HV, along with probably either Bloodbuzz or Conversation 16 (I’d have a harder time choosing between those two tbh)

Those four + England are that album's top tier for sure
Alligator was the National's Speak Now

Conversation 16, England, Bloodbuzz, Afraid of Everyone, and Little Faith are the best on HV imo

terrible love, england, bloodbuzz, conv 16, vanderlyle

Vanderlyle is arse and probs the worst song there. Afraid of Everyone and Little Faith, while dec on their own terms, are a definitive example of album-defining average - like, they *are* HV perhaps more than any other track, but putting them on the top shelf if like claiming that Breathe is a highlight on DSOTM

Vanderlyle is a classic to me, their best closer.
Watching it live the first time I caught the band cemented it.
Ranked/Rated HV would go like:
1. Sorrow [5/5]
2. Lemonworld [5/5]
3. Conversation 16 [5/5]
4. Vanderlyle [5/5]
5. Bloodbuzz [4.5/5]
6. England [4.5/5]
7. Terrible Love [4.5/5]
8. Runaway [4.5/5]
9. Anyone's Ghost [4/5]
10. Afraid of Everyone [3.5/5]
11. Little Faith [3.5/5]
For me the slight weakness is tracks 3-5, why it's only my third favourite National album. The three worst songs all back to back.

HV is all 5/5s, only album with that honor imo

Album Rating: 4.0
Sorrow is the worst on HV, Little Faith is close
|
| |
sorrow is not the worst wtf
for me it's probably afraid of everyone or england

Album Rating: 4.2
Afraid of Everyone was amazing live and more intense, made me love it even more. The alt. version of Terrible Love is so much better than the original and their best song imo
|
| |
Vanderlyle has probably the most vapid climax in the National discog (closely rivalled by Runaway) and by far the weakest lyrics on HV. Sorrow does well not to lean on trite structural crutches and its writing is perf for what it is

My approximate ranking:
1. Bloodbuzz Ohio
2. Lemonworld
3. Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks
4. Sorrow
5. Runaway
6. Little Faith
7. Conversation 16
8. Afraid Of Everyone
9. Terrible Love
10. Anyone's Ghost
11. England

'All our lonely kicks are getting harder to find
We'll play nuns versus priests until somebody cries'
I hate those lyrics, the way they scan, the melody, delivery, everything. A dirge and goofy in a bad way. Rest of 'Little Faith' is ok but that chorus is clunkier than the worst of 'Alligator', don't like it at all.
I know it's specific, but that's the low point of the album ;P

I will never understand the love for Lemonworld. Easily the most disposable track from all of Alligator, Boxer and High Violet

The lyrics alone are top tier.
Then Matt's delivery which he described as 'third day with a head cold' or something like that, they're perfect for that song.
