I used to go back and forth between this, Symbolic and Legion. Edit - And Pierced From Within, Sceptor of the Ancients as well as Morbid Angel's first album.
But in recent years, this is clearly #1 and there's a bit of a gap between this and my other favorite DM albums.

this and symbolic are in two seperate categories for me, both are DM but sound and feel absolutely different. it feels so strange for me to compare them.

personally Symbolic sounds much more straight progressive metal to me, its hard for me to even link that album and Sound of Perseverance with death metal aside from knowing it was written by Chuck. This album is death metal turned up to 11

Also always looked at Symbolic as not a dm album. Amazing nonetheless. Favorite dm album of all time is a tough ass call but this, Mental Funeral, Effigy, Scepter, Fuckin Death, Fragmentary Evidence and one of the Gorguts albums are up there.

This or Like An Ever Flowing Stream for me as well, actually. Black Death Horizon is highly up there too. Don't jam a ton of DM these days though, if I thought harder there might be a few other contenders.
