Alligator and Boxer are equally flawless imo, this is comfortably their 3rd best

I’m not sure about this side b of high violet is better talk.. I’m inclined to agree, but side A has terrible love and side B has lemon world so maybe it evens out

The arrangements in Boxer are by far more interesting than Alligator's - that album was ankle-deep in the landfill of Things All Guitar Bands Do. Lotta good stuff melodically and chord-wise ofc, but Boxer has got so many more interesting contours

These guys definitely look like they get into a lot of trouble

maybe but Matt’s performance makes it a lot less interesting + there’s less variety
|
| |
Not sure if that’s true about Alligator, man. Not every guitar band has songs like Geese, Val Jester, or Baby We’ll Be Fine
I always thought that Alligator was quite a bit more interesting musically than Boxer. Boxer’s great too, a bit monochrome tho

Boxer might be more textured which appeals to some but the actual arrangements on Alligator are a good bit better imo

ALLIGATOR is undoubtedly a great album but its far too unpolished and unrefined to secure a spot in the band's Mt. Rushmore, honestly. This, BOXER, and HIGH VIOLET are no-brainers but gun to my head I'm picking SLEEP WELL BEAST over ALLIGATOR, too.

the unpolished/unrefined nature is what makes it interesting for we alligator truthers

But I already have LONG DRIVE / LONESOME CROWDED WEST to scratch that purposely disheveled indie rock itch.
|
| |
Maybe it’s a bit “unrefined” compared to the all-grown-up Boxer, but what’s actually so unrefined about it? You make it sound like it’s Pavement or something
Plus, Alligator is plenty textured too, I think it just might be that it comes more from the instruments themselves than any after-the-fact ‘texturing’
It’s the most musical of all their albums I think

“It’s the most musical of all their albums and that’s why it’s my favorite”
if you mean by that what I think you mean I would say that goes to TWFM actually

For me, the music on this one mushes together a little too often. It’s honestly kinda hard for me to make out what’s going on in the music sometimes.
But we all have our preferences when it comes to soundz and vibez

that’s interesting, I feel like the melodies here are pretty direct

I mean the music besides the vocals

I can see that on certain tracks. others are very direct musically. This Is The Last Time especially
|
| |
First half of This is the Last Time is very direct, yes. Second half is a perfect example of what I’m talking about tho
Edit: I guess it’s more the ending or the outro than the “second half,” but I figured you knew what part I meant

I agree with the notion that Alligator is great, but it doesn’t show Natty at their best. I couldn’t replace Boxer or HV so easily. Probably this one too, tbh. I just haven’t quite gotten around to pulling the necessary triggers yet
