You're not missing much tbh. Sad Songs is definitely worth a listen (if just for "Available"), but the s/t is pretty average.

I pretty much only ever return to Sad Songs for "Available" but it definitely has a number other great songs as well. It's just that that song is one of my favorite National tracks and all of their other albums (except for the s/t) are far more consistent imo, so if I want to listen to a National album I put one of them on rather than Sad Songs.

That's probably my 2nd or 3rd fav off Sad Songs, but it still doesn't approach Available imo.

Best tracks off Sad Songs are Available, Cardinal Song, Slipping Husband, and Lucky You. All those are 4+ tracks (Available is a 5/5), all the rest are 3.5 down. So a generally great album but by the National's standards it's very sub-par.
