I've (perhaps wrongly) assumed that Periphery are utter garbage, sometime preconceptions can be a bitch, or a blessing? Idk.

I get the Tool 101 thing in a tech level but this album have a total different vibe from any other Tool. Yet I think, if they continue, they should aim for new things for sure.
"Ugh don't make me go relisten to Periphery"
I won t but if I did you would find a way to validate yourself...3 cool first tracks and then they went down the radio drain.
It would be much esaier and safe for Tool to make something more radio friendly though.

Can't imagine spending more than $30 to see Tool live, unless I'm paying to see someone else and Tool is opening for them.

They've gone for 10+ min songs and still n1. That's why ppl hate them. Some ppl want their bands stay underground. And the best of all, they are the biggest without changing their sound in the least. They are unique.
Don't get me wrong, there are many bands with an unmistakable sound but it's hard to be so successful without giving in musically, and Tool did it.

No way. I think most people here couldn't care less who's on the billboards and who isn't. That's super 90s bm right there. Sellouttssss!!

They hate them because of their unrealistic standards and moral imperatives!
I mean, we can become the sun if we release our inner light? That hippie shit doesn't fly around here.

What better way for a new page to state how well-made an album this is.
Not only did they expand on what made songs as Reflection and Rosetta Stoned such journeys and yet Descending could go on forever.
Maynard might not scream and sing B4s but to say that what he delivers here isn't as good or impressive as that, is an insult to the finesse of his voice. The choice of notes, timbre, articulation and phrasing in most of his lines here is so exquisite. Hard to believe it was done ‘in the moment’.

Yep. You can't deny the musicianship on display here. Maynard is no exception. Yes he's aged and he's not pushing his voice as much as he used to but his delivery is still great.

You bet it is. When I'm not listening to this (which is all the time since release) I even hear certain melodies and riffs in my dreams.

Idk complaining that most of the riffs on a rock album are minor pentatonic or aeolian seems a bit selective since that criticism applies to pretty much the whole genre. It’s also a weird one here because issue is it’s almost all aeolian with power and suspended chords, 7empest is the only song that really takes a rock n roll, blues scale inspired approach. All of their previous albums had more obvious rock inspiration. We get a bit of tritone based harmony at the start of culling voices but that’s not in a blues scale or rock context.
This album almost comes across like a mild post metal album with its meandering buildups and song structures. No doubt this is not their peak of harmonic complexity, which was never their strength anyways, and, I think Adam and Maynard may be struggling with the rhythms a bit tbh which leads to the safe melodic and harmonic approach.
