Songwriting and musicianship are totally separate things milliondead

"nowadays it's cool to shit on acclaimed bands that actually put in the work and hours to craft something special, so I'm not surprised by the recent negativity"
What a load of BS. Some people simply don't like this album, how hard could it be to understand that?

Album rules. Don't see how the songwriting is bad. Songs flow really nicely. Nothing sounds forced to me. I understand people not liking the vocoder but i like it

"Songwriting and musicianship are totally separate things" I mean, I feel one feeds directly into the other, at least in the case of most great musicians. I think it's perfectly arguable if not plain out factual that good composition is a part of good musicianship and vice versa. It wouldn't be good musicianship if somebody cleanly shredded a bunch of notes if their note choice was bad and they all sounded like random shit next to each other. Musicianship isn't necessarily synonymous with technicality/virtuosity and I wasn't using it in that way. The rhythm and chord progressions throughout the album are very synchronous and beautiful to my ear and undoubtedly most people that enjoy prog, jazz fusion, prog death or any mix of those.

i mean it all comes down to the fact that i just dont like it. no justification i can give is going to resonate with someone who does, so we can just leave it at that.

some very strange arguments being made itt
I mean this is quite obviously (to me) always gonna be a divisive record / band. Put me in the group who doesn’t think this really works. None of the elements are terrible by themselves (not necessarily “attractive” either) but the concoction is something I’d never yearn for

I am also a sucker for really proggy stuff with good drumming so I'll always be biased toward stuff like this

Yeah, Sean Reinert is one of the best drummers ever. His work on Death's Human is also sterling.

sean reinert is probably my favorite drummer of all time. he should be placed right up there with dave lombardo and gar samuelson.

I can fully appreciate both the effort and musicianship that went into this album. I don't think I've seen anyone criticize any of that or try to come off as cool not liking this, whatever-the-fuck that even means.
I just think that this album aims for the stars but the outcome is akin to the fate of the Apollo 13. It just doesn't work for me and I find some of the artistic choices to be grating. I still respect the band for trying something different. It's brave and commendable, but also risky.

Songwriting is the conception of the music and musicianship is the execution of the instruments

Regardless of your opinion on this album, this is definitely the kind of debate you'll see on a prog metal thread

i fully understand why someone would find this grating tbh
"this is definitely the kind of debate you'll see on a prog metal thread"
yeah, and we've never been above them lol
"Songwriting is the conception of the music and musicianship is the execution of the instruments"
i agree with this. under this, an professional orchestra player might be great at playing what's on the music sheet, and not necessarily good a writing stuff from scratch. Those skills might correlate, but that doesn't mean they're the same thing
