Right, he isn't bad, but terrible

For the level of success he's had, lars is inexcusably bad at drumming. Sloppy is exactly the right word, listen to multiple live recordings of any song of theirs and there's absolutely no consistency wrt where he puts fills, cymbal accents, etc and he makes tons of incredibly basic fuckups on a regular basis.

He got by on sheer enthusiasm and intensity on their early albums and then they dumbed down their sound so much that his lack of proficiency was less noticeable, but he's never been a great drummer

I remember watching someone play Guitar Hero: Metallica and even on the classic albums I noticed how weird his charts were. He puts his accents in the strangest places

I also disagree that he was at all influential, there's hardly anything he does that his contemporaries or influences didn't do better, and most of what makes him unique as a drummer never really got copied because it requires being incompetent in the specific way he's incompetent

Hahahaha, that made me laugh really hard

I like his quirks in the studio though. It makes his drumming feel musical, even though he may actually suck

Lmao thanks park :p

He sounds a lot better on record yeah, one of the cool things about 80s tallica is that it feels like every song is the one take out of a hundred where lars lucked out and got everything right

I saw an article that was like “Jazz drummer listens to Enter Sandman for the first time and covers it note for note” and was like “yeah that makes sense”

Lars is literally the weakest drummer out of all of the big four in thrash. That includes the revolving door of drummers in Megadeth, Lombardo, and whoever the fuck plays in anthrax
