but his 'style' here is leftover Sabbath riffs + palm mutes
nailed it

Sabbath doesn’t spend a lot of time grooving in permutations of 7, the fact that these rhythms feel familiar goes to show how good Tool is at corralling their experimentation into palatable musical ideas. In most prog and mathcore type rhythm focused bands, the time changes are very noticeable, which I enjoy at times but I like that tool tends to sum their’s into more familiar grooves.
Guitar tones are obviously a matter of preference but I would probably go
Lateralus (the guitar leads in parabola sound so 3 dimensional it’s almost unbelievable)
Aenima (potentially has better rhythm tones and more subtlety with the constant low volume phaser/flanger/wah manipulation)
This
10K days (there’s a higher gain higher presence amp mixed in on this one that doesn’t do it for me)
Undertow
Opiate

> so we're all agreed, album is the path to cosmic and spiritual salvation
It definitely doesn't hurt the journey. But their message of a cosmic empathy can really alienate certain people.

Culling Voices has fully grown on me. Probably my fave track on here

Most relevant lyrics at least.

That and the t/t are my least faves here. It's all about 2-3-4 (or 2-4-6 if interludes are included, yuck).

Interludes don't count for me since they're not on the phys version, and thank God cus they'd stop this from being a 5

The physical version is still an enigma to me though. Does it even exist?

It exists in the joints of reality, in the space between being and void.

LMAO Sabbath riffs as critique is only seen with Tool...
Amazing thread honestly...at least Tool masquerade them with their own style, unlike so many bands we all love.
The big issue I m having with you guys is to bash Tool acting like you see ahead and above any Tool fan...(the opposite attitude is equally debatable)
Go to a Tool show, you know they are good musicians, its just unrealistic to put them on pair with mediocre music just because its not your style, or you are upset with "hype"
plus you can deconstruct any metal riff to Sabbath one...bug off

Sabbath basically took the pentatonic and blues scales and turned them into the essence of rock; hundreds of bands do the same thing with different (or not so different) tones without adding anything melodically. Those riffs worked in the first place because they're so simple, which is why rock musicians often seem reluctant to screw with them. I'll concede to Itwasthatwas that Tool get full marks for appropriating them to different rhythms, but at the same time the simplicity of both scales gives them a disposition to different configurations. That simplicity doesn't make them good or bad, but imo it's a little embarrassing hearing Adam Jones trot out the same early learning guitar licks when Justin Chancellor is laying down a doozy of a creative bass performance, especially given that he's used similar sounds to greater effect before (Parabola!) and has played relatively creative riffs (Vicarious, Aenema) on other albums. This performance just feels complacent melodically, and since the guitar tones are a huge step down from past work his timbre takes a hit too. That leaves him as the least interesting rhythm player in a band full of rhythm players: not the most exciting place to be.
I'd totally see Tool live if cheap tickets came my way though! Partially because they're talented, but also I'd be interested to see how the collective headspace you get as part of an audience changed their music

It would not be embarrassing at all from you. Embarrassing is to consider this below Slayyyter, only to give an obvious recent example, not just from you but with many other users here...which means most of those rates are not from pure love in music but political.
Anyway...flies in the soup...

''It exists in the joints of reality, in the space between being and void. ''
''Just reach out, you'll feel it.''
I'm afraid that if I reach out into the joints of reality my arm will get caught in that swirly thingy from the cover with all the eyes or whatever they are.

Haha okay, if you want to look at pop albums I'd pick over this (there are many), Slayyyter isn't the best example. I haven't given much time to that album - had a few bops and a few annoying tracks, and I didn't make up my mind how far the scope of its craft went, so I gave it a benefit of the doubt 3 and left it on the backburner as unpretentiously trashy fun

Lol DDD, what's your problem with that album? I had no interest in hearing it, but now I'm intrigued. I haven't even entered the thread, you just can't miss that er.. 'striking' album cover.

Flies in the soup, if they don't die, they can be really annoying tho lol
nah for real, I'm just trying to get where are the 3's and the 3,5's represented here? Polarizing attitude, mainly negative, is very beyond reach for me, specially when its made in pure consciousness...usually 2ers don't give a damn and bug out...not the case here...you put any Periphery above this fcs lol...

"Lol DDD, what's your problem with that album? I had no interest in hearing it, but now I'm intrigued. I haven't even entered the thread, you just can't miss that er.. 'striking' album cover." something obnoxious that appeared on main page...not a particular hate of mine, it just showed up at the same time as Tool more or less...and I saw some thread bullies to rate it higher than Tool...(out of fun maybe? - which is cool...not cool if its honest rating)

Ugh don't make me go relisten to Periphery to reevaluate that. This album actively annoyed me more because while Periphery are obnoxious and annoying in general, I at least got the sense that they were trying to develop their craft on that album whereas this feels like Tool-101. Also my expectations for Periphery were way lower than for this, which probs gave them a leg up. Would possibly drop it if I heard it again

Agreed this album blows
