how does this not work? i get thats its inaccessible and offputting but if anything it works. it flows perfectly, leans fully into the sci fi slant, and is technically spot on

songwriting is poor, jazzy stuff and clean guitars don’t mesh and sound out of place, vocoders are nails on a chalkboard bad, Scott burns worst production job by a large margin.
i just don’t think any part of this band really works.

songwriting has its ups and downs (eagle nature, uroboric forms, and how could i are brilliant), what clean guitars?, vocoder is silly and out of place but not aesthetically displeasing at least for me, production is fine if maybe a little uneven. but overall its just a good ol time and holds up infinitely because its so different

"songwriting is poor" Utter blasphemy. Like, this band has top tier musicianship, it literally cannot be surpassed, only matched. The vocoder is just another instrument. Traced is a 5 too. I don't think the fall off happened until Kindly Bent.

Milliondead is spot on, but nowadays it's cool to shit on acclaimed bands that actually put in the work and hours to craft something special, so I'm not surprised by the recent negativity. Also, thought "they" bounced right back with Ascension Codes, another brilliant record
