"The music is mostly formulaic and a lot of the songs don't go anywhere.”
Imagine listening to Sickman or Godsmack and thinking "this music is formulaic".

I mean some of the songwriting can be pretty basic but the performances are all incredible.

gnarliest arc of all time
you know an album's punishing when it starts out with Them Bones and that's the happiest song

This is one of those albums where I can't help but be like "I don't get it at all". It feels like people are playing a cruel prank on me and no one actually loves this album as much as they say.
I mean, listen to the song Dam That River. It's probably the most middle of the road song I have ever heard. Every single solitary detail about that track is painfully average. The only song here that really sticks out to me besides Would? is Angry Chair but even that track feels half finished. You think it's going somewhere at the end but nothing actually happens.

Also @SitarHero you might not want to think it is but the music is very formulaic. Nearly every song uses a slight variation of this exact structure:
Riff x4
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Chorus
Guitar solo
Verse
Chorus
I also think that In Utero is formulaic in a similar way however the music on that album is by far more engaging and makes up for it. Superunknown is still by far the best though.

Not true, man. One example - listen to that riff during the verses and how they work with the vocal lines. Creative af, groovy and really catches your ear. Whole album is full of cool shit like that.
But I guess if you don't get it, you don't get it.

Well I have been told that this album requires many listens for you to properly understand it, but for me the more and more I listened to it the less and less I liked even what were once highlights for me. Even Would? I got bored of after about four listens. I have also heard the same for Superunknown however I somehow got into that album after only a couple of listens.

I don't think it should take more than a couple of spins. I dug it hard from the first listen. The borderline doom sound really did it for me.
Probably just not your kind of band dude, no use trying to force it.

I've heard bits of it, but never given it a full listen. I'll have to check it out!

Yeah, oh well. Guess they're just not for me then. I do love Rotten Apple off Jar Of Flies though. That one's really good.

@wigga try the newer ones and work your way backwards. black is way more accessible and immediate. some great bangers there and has duvall's best vocal performance of the three.

sry if you don’t like this album you’re tripping. Literally the best album ever made imo

Even if I enjoyed the music I probably couldn't bring myself to give it anything over a 3 because besides the title track, Down In A Hole and Would?, most of the songs don't really build or go anywhere or get to a satisfying conclusion, and like I've already mentioned the music is for the most part pretty formulaic. It's not bad. I just don't get the insane hype over it.

It’s really just not for you man. Layne Staley’s performance alone makes this record a classic to me.

Rooster builds. But there's nothing wrong with a verse/chorus/bridge structure, anyway.
You need to listen to more metal. Sometimes music is about the riffs m/
And yes, Layne is such a good singer. The harmonies on this are also a huge of what makes it so cool
