this might actually be their best album I’m beginning to think

the absolutely atrocious artwork kinda throws you off but it’s such a good album

My 5th favorite National but like 5 of their very best songs are on here.

Demons has really grown on me over the years. the melody seems so tepid at first but the song eventually gives way to this sprawling, grand sound but is still a little subdued throughout it all. I feel like that mixture is what The National does best

this has some of their best songs and some of their worst. "i need my girl" bores me to tears every time

Fireproof, Heavenfaced and I Need My Girl are weaker than the rest yeah

Album Rating: 4.2
Demons and I Need My Girl are great but not among the best. My least favs are Heavenfaced, Slipped, and Fireproof.
|
| |
I Need My Girl is trash agreed
Slipped however is one of the tracks that most cleanly sums up everything good about this record jfc awful take

Actually I’m listening to Slipped again for the first time in a while, it’s very good, might be like my 9th favorite on here.

way too diverse of a sound palette here for the whole album to be summed up by any one song, but especially not Slipped

"way too diverse of a sound palette here"
is this a bit

i mean just general variety in the songwriting not the sound palette necessarily (decent amount of that though)
|

there's a reasonable amount of variation here between tracks in pacing, structure etc. but this thing has probs the most economical arrangements and monochrome aesthetic of any National record. Don't Swallow the Cap is more representative of what it actually sounds like, but I think Slipped and maybe This Is The Last Time capture the sense of those aspects better than anything else
Could probably argue for Humiliation too, but that track bores me so idc

yes those 2 songs are completely different, using both as a pair to represent the album makes sense, using either one on its own does not
|
| |
hmm they both nail down the sparseness bleakness subtle progressionness that ultimately defines this against TN's other shit (albeit in different ways) so i don't get the issue, but also don't mind 2 for the price of 1

This Is The Last Time is pretty much the opposite of sparse to my ears. one of their most lush tracks I can think of rn
|
| |
this is one of those classic tiered albums
great tier: i should live in salt, sea of love, don't swallow the cap, this is the last time
good tier: demons, graceless, slipped, pink rabbits, hard to find
mid-bad tier: fireproof, i need my girl, heavenfaced, humiliation
