Yeah but there's always room for other music inspired writing on this site, like Keelan's essay.

yeah but reviews that
presumed that actual "what it sounds like" reviews have already been written a million times over and everyone's already heard the record anyway.
are stupid
|
| |
I will say that they're not technically "reviews", or at least traditional reviews, but they're no less valid as writing.

my guesss would be because its obnoxious as fuck
Because it becomes gospel. I don't think I've ever read a review for this where somebody details what it sounds like, they just
make these wild exaggerations about how mystical and legendary this is and then hail Jeff Mangum as their lord and savior.
It's just so obnoxious
Sure it is but the thing I don't understand why it needs to be taken to heart so deeply, especially when this is an album that's been placed in a sort of ironic pedestal (sort of like, say, Lil b) - What's said about this album should never be taken to heart when something like that happens, because at that point the praise becomes buzzword/trend, a lot of the people hyperbole about it probably haven't even heard it and if they have they probably don't like it that much (you can thank /mu/)
Now sure (going back to my lil b comparison) Lil b fanboys (And especially the endless wave of fake fanboys) may be the worst thing fucking thing that has ever happened to humanity, but I think this album sets itself apart from situations like those because it's such an awfully abstract work that almost anything can be taken out of it - and no, I don't mean in the music, I mean in its lyrics. Those are the biggest draws for me with this record personally, and ESPECIALLY the way the music and lyrics work together - How he constantly uses otherwise horrific imagery with a bouncy and sickeningly happy mellody to relate the story of an innocent child (Album's largely about Anne Frank), and ofc, lets not forget about our bootiful ~~emotion~~
I think a lot of people look too much into the music itself - Taken for that, it is what it is, a catchy and fun little box of indie rock/folk-y tunes with a ton of energy, not really a lot of things are especial about it in that aspect, ut from my experience, I've never really seen anyone praising that above all else - It's always the lyrics and such.

I've always loved the instrumentation on this album even if some of it is quite simple, the lyrics and vocals just send it over the top
