They evolved a lot from a musical aspect on here and some of the songs are brilliant but as a whole this isn't one of my personal favourites. Title track, Slave Driver and Cutter are all top-tier though.

cutter is also a great call, plenty of sick tunes on this album when most people seem to be too busy jizzing over dark horse and wretched world

Nearly every song on here would've been the standout best track on any non-Jane Doe album. It isn't just slave driver or cutter that are underappreciated, it's Reap What You Sow, Effigy, Worms Will Feed, Wishing Well, Damages, etc. These are brilliant once in a life time songs. If this album were in place of Jane Doe back in the early 2000s this would easily be one of the highest rated metalcore albums on the website. The problem is the majority of the fanbase are here from Jane Doe, and Axe to Fall isn't Jane Doe in a similar same way Cryptopsy's Unspoken King isn't None so Vile.

I don't think this is better than Jane Doe, though. You take any Converge record from Jane Doe to Axe to Fall and they're all individually brilliant and would receive gargantuan amounts of praise in the window that Jane Doe had. Like, Converge are a once in a lifetime band. Most of their albums are excellent, regardless of context, and each has its own sonic character.

it's an impossible scenario they release this album with what they had in the turn of the century, so it's a pretty moot point

Loads of underrated cuts on here.

Slave Driver and Cruel Bloom in particular.
