I've always heard that it was Seven Churches, but my vote goes to SBG because Seven Churches sounds more like thrash metal to me.

Death metal was named from Death's Death by Metal demo (at the time the band was called Mantas) and Possessed's Death Metal demo, both released in 1984. But neither of them sounded like death metal, they were essentially just extreme thrash like Sodom (In the Sign of Evil - 1984) or even Venom back in '81.

I like to think Death really had the first death metal sound, because it just makes sense that the death metal band was called fucking Death. It's perfect.

''Didn't death metal start in 87 with Scream Bloody Gore''

Not really, I think Jeff Becerra came up with the term Death Metal and Seven Churches really sounds like
Death Metal even though it shows many Thrash influences.

I honestly wanna know who comes up with those genre tags in Wikipedia

Though it's not like we're that better since we still don't have a groove metal tag...

I don't care that much about the genre tags.
