This took like 4-5 years to grow on me which is why it's prob my fave

Interesting. This album clicked for me instantly. My favorite NTL album.

Don't Swallow the Cap is the best NTL song, but this is probably not the best NTL record

It’s similar to many earlier songs but I feel like Sea of Love is a bit underrated

Caught the band at All Points East festival last night...after seeing them last in 2017 supporting SWB which was a little disappointing (an 8 out of 10 show at best) it was great to see them back on 10 out of 10 form. They took the most songs from this album which is correct, history will prove this is their best ;)

God Tier: Don't Swallow the Cap, Bloodbuzz Ohio, Slow Show, Terrible Love, About Today

Almost as Good: The System Only Dreams, Pink Rabbits, England, Fake Empire, Graceless

Really Solid: I Need My Girl, Day I Die, Tropic Morning News, This Is the Last Time, Mr November

Ok: Mistaken for Strangers, Weird Goodbyes, Light Years

Snooze fest/ fell flat: Rylan

That's unfortunate because I think it seems to be the band's favourite

I can't see this is the last time translating well to a live setting

Was a strange inclusion yup, the second half of the song even on record I don't always appreciate - first half hit the spot though

Mistaken for Strangers arrived early and sounded a bit 'off' - on the other side 'Need My Girl', 'Terrible Love' and 'Day I Die' were better live than on record as usual. Also the closing version of 'About Today' was immmense.

Guess 'Slow Show' and 'Bloodbuzz' hit me the most, 'Cap' was a perfect choice of opener and 'Graceless' really stands out live too

I’ll always marginally prefer High Violet and Boxer to this but it’s still a top 10-15 album of all time for me. It’s probably the most National-y National album and I think it’s the one that pushed them from major indie darlings to almost mainstream (or at least it’s proportionally the most popular among their current fanbase - on Spotify 4 of their top 10 most popular current songs are for this while no other album has lore than 1) so makes sense they pull a lot from it in live shows.

Second half makes the song, for me. Looks like a decentish lineup of songs, would only consider two of them in my top 10 tho

yeah, half the SWB songs flopped on the supporting tour I caught (and seems the same with 'Easy' material), just too sleepy and also that album had a lot of big (unearned?) crescendo build ups and they can't just ram a set with them (here they still had about six or seven 'big finale' sections, that's def enough) - I think the band know what works now though going by this set. One of the new songs was interesting, not amazing but there was something there (Tropic Morning News).

I dunno, I got the feeling that might work out the last time I see them live though - they're no spring chickens :/

interesting, this wasn't missing much for me - maybe 'Sorrow', 'Brainy', 'Conversation 16', 'Vanderlyle' was a great closer before

I do like 'Demons' and 'Humiliation' off this too, when they do the 'heavy' version of 'Humiliation' live that's fun

Fake empire and this is the last time are the only two here that rate for me. Brainy is super boring imo but sorrow, conv 16, and vanderlyle would also be in my top. Same with I should live in salt, sea of love (way better pick than graceless imo) all the wine, secret meeting, guest room

I saw them on their SWB tour in 2017 and it was an amazing concert. Was at Boston and I believe the very first show of the whole tour, so maybe they were at their most invigorated.

Even though this has some of their best songs, I not only prefer the previous three but also SWB.

Everything they've done after HV has been increasingly sleepy and unfocused though, so I hope they looked back to their mid-2000s material for inspiration while working on the new album.

They headlined night one (day 2 was rained out and cancelled/refunded heh) of moon river festival here in Chattanooga this past Saturday. Tickets were $130. Wanted to go but didn’t. Sad. I heard they were impeccable.
