@Willie that Toronto 1986 concert is pure sickness, I have it bookmarked and am awe struck everything I watch it. Fight Fire With Fire there is uncanny.

Some points that may have already been raised
Inomorata when he sings "Misery" in the chorus really hearkens back to "Misery -there's much more to life than what you see" from My friend of Misery
Theres also a guitar effect used in the song, 6:40 mark to around the 7:44 min mark which is has a very similar effect used in the guitar solo of My Friend of Misery 4:17 - 4:49 min mark
There's a riff in the bridge of If Darkness Had A Son 3:32 - 3:46 min mark which reminds me heaps of a riff in Motley Crue's Piece of your action 3:06 - 3:21 min mark

The only thing I noticed straight away was the 60s Batman theme music turned into a riff in Shadows Fall towards the end - I think there’s a chance with the theme of childhood/teenage formative years’ there are a few homages to stuff from band member’s pasts here

The early ‘Chasing Light’ riff has grown on me the most here

I just found it yesterday while going down a Metallica YouTube rabbit hole. That is the single most intense show I've seen from them.
It's telling that you can find videos from just a few months earlier and their body language is so much more loose, and the songs are play at normal speed. Lars put on a top performance, and James was a fucking beast.
One of the first shows with Jason after Cliff died:

Very early opinion is I think this will be my favorite since St Anger. I will update as I finish the album.

"I don't think I ever told this story, but this album literally broke my ass. When it dropped in 2008 I went on a hike at night to jam it, and I wound up listening to it 3 times in a row in a secluded park while swinging on a swingset. It was a fantastic time. I wake up the next day and my ass cheeks are just destroyed. Pulled pork. Couldn't move for like 2 days.
Good times"
Twice in one sitting, huh?

the metallica youtube rabbit hole is insane. pick any tour date from any year and there is footage of it, the whole show in a lot of instances. pick any song from any release and you can find demos, instrumentals, and isolated tracks for it. every interview, every dvd, every radio spot, every pseudo-making of documentary... its all there

It’s crazy. From suing Napster to basically having every little bit of their history floating around online. I also watched pieces of the making of Death Magnetic, too. I didn’t have two hours to sit through the whole thing.

i stumbled across 30-60min long making of docs for each of load / reload / garage inc. many years ago. i don't even think the band themselves remember they exist (i'm sure they'd be selling them if they did), let alone 99% of fans.
i read somewhere that this new album actually isn't going to have any sort of studio doc, which would be the first time since justice

Revisiting ‘Hardwired’ and ‘St Anger’ and this is definitely more consistent than those two.
‘Death Magnetic’ has better songs so I would put it a shade above this, despite the production job that’s nearly as bad as whatever they tried on ‘St Anger’ :/
I’d also put this above ‘Reload’ that only has four good songs and I guess just behind ‘Load’ - though that’s a very different album to this anyway

Yeah I have to agree. Revisited Hardwired and Death Magnetic, ratings dropped and upped to 2 and 3, respectively. The good songs on DM are superior but this one is more enjoyable overall, production included. There's something about this that makes it not boring.
