just giving my 2 cents on the conversation, not like it's going anywhere anyway

Whoracle always felt like a not-as-good sequel to TJR and Clayman always felt like a not-as-good sequel to Colony.

"Damage done - fiction run was peak DT"
This is the correct take
People hardcore sleep on Haven though!

Haven is like the foundation of everything that came after. It's like the bare-bones plan that hasn't entirely been fleshed out yet. Don't get me wrong, I like it too, but I can see why it's lost in the shuffle.

Oh I definitely know why it's left behind. They wanted to flaunt the fact they now had a dedicated keyboard player in the band and hadn't learned how to integrate it into their sound smoothly yet, so you get a sound that's uncharacteristically synth-heavy and bombastic. That just happens to be a style of metal that I can have a sweet tooth for sometimes lol, and I *do* think the lack of riffs criticism is a bit oversold for that one.

Haven is actually my favorite along with Character, so I'd say the run from Projector - Character is my personal favorite. Though Construct and onward is pretty enjoyable too in a different way, but I love that sound too

Haven is your favorite??
Where have you been my whole life

Haven could have done with a bit more diversity. The songs all kind of blend together for me. I think Stanne once said that the first "draft" of the album was more like Projector than what we ultimately got. The core concept is great, though. I like the kitschy turn-of-the-century keys.

| |
Hmm, I feel the songs have enough to distinguish each other, especially with the interplay between the synth and guitar leads (i.e. "Built to Last") and you've got more atmospheric, tone-shifting entries in the likes of the t/t, "The Same" and "Emptier Still."
Perhaps not as diverse as what would eventually come, but not lacking in diversity at the same time.

Haven with more Projector influence could have possibly been my favorite DT album.

Yeah flug it's true. Haven't heard half of whoracle

Wish I enjoyed Projector more, just don't think it stacks up to their prime run even if I do overall enjoy it. Think the only DT album I'm not crazy about is Void, or Mind's I (but haven't heard it in a while, admittedly).
Sorry to derail this IF thread lol
Back to that, have to admit Clayman grew off me over time, still enjoy it but it was gradually dethroned from its top position.

Projector and Damage Done are the top two DT albums I listen to. Jester Race and Colony are the top two In Flames releases.
I don't particularly like Void or Minds I either. Although, Hedon is one of my favorite DT songs. In hindsight, Hedon was kind of foreshadowing what was to come on Projector.

Took me too long to realize that the acoustic outro in "A Dialogue in B Flat Minor" is a reprise of the opening riff. The vocals are a bit overkill in that track but it's still one of my favorites on this.
