I usually listen to Unwound and Converge but the sky moves sideways is really good

I remember reading about how he was inspired by Tears for Fears and Talk Talk, etc. on the last album and even this one ''intelligent pop music'' and he's right, that stuff was elegant, sophisticated pop music, but they had amazing melodies too, and amazing, distinctive voices and were great songwriters, Wilson did not capture any of those things on this or To The Bone.

TtB was specifically inspired by the great art pop records of the 1980s. Mentioned by Wilson as influences are: The Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk, Hounds of Love by Kate Bush, The Seeds of Love by Tears for Fears, So by Peter Gabriel, and the cover is clearly a nod to Aladdin Sane so it's probably safe to say that Bowie is an influence as well. He loves Prince and covered Sign 'o the Times on the tour that I saw, so that too.
I love To the Bone and its influences too. Despite that though it also sounds like a very modern and vibrant album to me that isn't actually pop at all really, outside of Permanating.
This however is a completely different story. I believe he was inspired by more modern electronic and pop music, making his version of that.

Don't remember if we talked about ''Anyone but Me'', but that song alone is almost superior to anything on here

Ι was always disappointed that the songs weren't parodying the originals

I probably said this before, but if the bonus tracks Ha Bloody Ha, Wave the White Flag, Every Kingdom Falls, Anyone But Me, and maybe Move Like a Fever were on here instead of the four weakest songs Follower, Eminent Sleaze, Self, and Personal Shopper, this would be a 4/5 rated album probably.

Given how horrendous this album is, it's hard to get my hopes up for the new PT material.

12 Years I Forgot, Man of the People, King Ghost, and Count of Unease are very good I think.

I remember this album being such a nice surprise when it finally dropped (as someone who was dreading it from the terrible lead up) It’s such a consistent diverse and unique addition to SW’s catalogue, and it’s a shame most people can’t get past SW’s use of pop or 80’s idioms (though I’d hardly call much of this “pop”). Put “Anyone but Me” before Count of Unease and it’s an even more complete listen

I’ll probably make a playlist of instrumental versions of these songs with my favorite bonus tracks mixed in, like I do with Radiohead albums and their b-sides.

ngl I love most of what Wilson does but didn't give this one a proper chance since I hated the marketing that lead up to the release and surrounding this album and the aesthetic doesn't appeal to me. King Ghost is pretty awesome tho

If only this were released as 1. Unself (long version) 2. King Ghost 3. Ha Bloody Ha 4. 12 Things I Forgot 5. Man of the People 6. Wave the White Flag 7. Anyone But Me 8. Count of Unease 9. Every Kingdom Falls 10. Hey Sleeper cause that’s the playlist I use (8 out of 10 rated album at least right there) and it is such a smooth listen. Then all the other songs could be on a bonus disc labeled “a bunch of annoying extra songs I made too if you’re into that also.”

There’s definitely the opportunity to vastly improve this album with some of the deluxe tracks. I really quite liked this album when it first came out but it hasn’t ages well and I have liked it less and less since its release. Conversely, I was very indifferent to To the Bone when it came out but I have enjoyed it more as the years have passed. Your post has inspired me to create my own TFB album.
