nah both are solid bands, especially origin. not great songwriters by any means, but a lot of great parts and riffs. underrated atmosphere too

ahahah I'm honestly not a fan of any of that, yet I think that album is somewhat peculiar, also has a cool runtime.

why do you claim the neoclassical noodling is random, when it's clearly composed in pretty much every single case?

No, it isn't. There are rare cases when it does sound coherent (Beyond creation's stuff, gorguts' stuff, cabinet by sop) but in the majority of the cases, it's directionless wankage

It's 30 minutes. I take it! And they do it pretty fast.

If neoclassical noodling in metal was driving a car it would crash into multiple cars killing at least 3 people

i think that's a totally incorrect and lazy critique. you're also generalizing a lot of bands because of a few. i'm pretty confident in saying that less than 1% of the parts in technical death metal albums are improvised (aka random, because how else would randomness occur in song composition?). metal in general requires too much accuracy to be able to improvise effectively, unless you're an absolute virtuoso.

a surprisingly small percentage of technical death metal bands even use "neoclassical noodling." you would know that if you listened to anything other than the big names. it sounds directionless to you, that's cool, but you can't claim that the guitarist didn't have a direction when they wrote it because it doesn't sound good to you. lazy.

"Dude I saw Necrophagist Spawn of Possession Obscura Archspire Beyond Creation Origin First Fragment Psycroptic and Gorod all at the same show and I thought it was just one band playing for 8 hours!!!!"

That collection of bands makes me want to vomit.

Most of those bands have created music worthy of one’s time and I say at that as someone who struggles getting into tech death generally.

all metal has its place. whether it's over the top technical fireworks or slow ass funeral riffing. you'll never see me commenting on funeral doom metal pages because i absolutely hate the fucking genre and slow riffs. slow shit does absolutely nothing for me, even in non-metal genres. it's so boring to see people who hate 80%+ of tech death commenting the same shit every week on tech death threads.

take a guitarist like yngwie. most people that i see want him to be more restrained and to play in a way that would not be true to himself. he's fucking yngwie, his whole philosophy is to play more notes than you can count. he wouldn't be yngwie if he played with restraint - that's his whole gig. i love the fact that these bands continue to play the way they want to despite what appears to be overwhelming negativity thrown their way. (from a very loud minority, mind you - as these are clearly very successful bands.)

‘Yea not my idea of good death metal / tech-death.‘

Fair, not my preferred tipple either (most of the time), doesn’t mean I can’t see the value in it. Anthracks is right, tech death seemingly has a bad rep by default/association. Unfairly maligned without reason imo.

I wouldn't say its got a bad rep by default Demon. As Antracks said, most people seem to like tech-death. I myself use to like it as well, my distaste for it came over time. I find a lot of tech-death (at least what's considered popular) lacks intensity, atmosphere, and as Pika already pointed out, lots of noodling. The defense of "but classical" is also just as eye-roll inducing as "tech-death sucks cause noodling / wanking". Don't get me wrong, I'm not against technicality. I really like what the disso bands are doing, DS is great, Vitriol is great, and countless others I'm forgetting, just cannot stand the Necrophagist / SoP / Obscura / Archspire etc. brands of tech-death. That is my bad take lol.

I like Necrophagist but not the bands they influenced, for the most part.
