FF... leku200

Considering consensus again, most people find the voice to be the most important in a song. This means that better (in the eyes of most listeners) vocals should catapult a band to a higher status if the genre or heaviness is similar. This indicates that Corey Taylor indeed has something over his competition. Think Metallica vs Megadeth too. Shots fired. Not really. All this does not mean the music is better, of course. Oftentimes, great vocals require sacrifices. But them being so important balances it out.

Limiting the discussion to screaming makes coming to a conclusion much easier though. Since the intent, therefore the GOAL of the performer, is usally very similar. I'm generalizing but when it comes to screaming this means coming across as aggressive, adding despair/horror/terror. Somebody who can't execute the vision as well (see my experience with different, hopefully neutral, "test subjects" mentioned above) will struggle to compete against someone who IS able to execute a vision. Or if somebody's execution of a vision does not sound to others as it sounds to him.. well this performer will also have a hard time topping the consensus tier list. But, thankfully, niches exist. Where people agree on a smaller scale.

One last idea: Human instinct is to actually do the exhale high volume shout in many extreme situations. So it's kind of like perfecting the half-forgotten (nowadays) familiar which results in a net positive for most. Subconsciously, I imagine.

Well I'm not a native english speaker so I'm open to correction. From what I've gathered screaming is used as both: a synonym for the category you call "harsh vocals" AND (pretty similar) to describe essentially everything upwards of grunting. I wouldn't use it as the latter but that's how we can see people use it. Lower, guttural shouts and even growls are regularly being labeled as "screams" so I am not sure why you're surprised.

@FlakMT Thanks for response. You mentioned critiquing vocals based on subgenre within metal. I think that's a good starting point because obviously a vocalist like Disturbed's David Drairman has high range and dynamics, where a death metal band like Tomb Mold sticks to a fairly narrow range. That being said, not many people hating on KSE Jesse Leach's vocals are giving helpful reasons. Making comparison to gauge against would help those of us who enjoy it get a clearer picture as to why they b tossing shade.

"how does not making a comparison = "shitlord attitude"?"

My bad with that sentence, not what I was trying to say. I meant there's disagreement over the vocal quality, and using comparisons could help demonstrate why they are or aren't up to par. Not everyone enjoys the vocals and that's fair. But not many reasons given outside the usual "vocals suck/are weak/boring/sounds like a helium-filled vagina queefing". Ok last one might actually work.

Also ya'll must enjoy the smell here, cause we still b stirring this shitstew pot of a thread. I mean damn, I'll start passing out straws soon homie.
