If you meant this album in particular I think it's interesting how so many people who like this album claim to like it ironically almost as if they're ashamed to just admit they enjoy something that doesn't take itself that seriously or is kinda trashy or doesn't have genuine "artistic merit", at the end of the day music is made to be enjoyed, so if you enjoy the music that makes it good, it served its purpose.

Also I don't rate anything here but if you must know its a 4.5

Sidenote: despite popular belief there's nothing really ironic about this album at all aside from like the start of money machine

pretty sure ironic music is made to be enjoyed ironically, and that doesn't mean you aren't admitting that its ~good~

sometimes what makes something really good is how bad it is, hence The Room's cult status

this is obnoxious, over-the-top, self-indulgent, and annoying, but it's so cheeky and confident about it that thats what makes it charming, and thats the honest take for me.

it is insanely tacky and gimmicky but it is also really well done so i kind of like it in a humorous way but also think it's the worst at the same time. i'm not sure i enjoy it in any capacity, but i also kind of admire it. opinions can be dynamic.

I agree with that sentiment but I think the main difference is I wouldn't say something I don't enjoy is good regardless of how admirable it is, but I understand still being able to appreciate something you don't enjoy

@oisin fair enough. my honest rating for this is a 3, ryus asked me to 5 it. i don't have any problem trying to balance subjectivity with a little bit of objective reasoning when it comes to rating music personally. although a lot of this is grating, from a technical and production standpoint it's impressively competent for what it is and thats why i think its "good" even if it isn't something i'll likely ever listen to again.

"there is a difference between ironic music and music that claims to be ironic to get a pass on how shit it is. 100 gecs is the latter."

theyve repeatedly said they dont intend for it to be ironic. other people are the ones ascribing irony to this

the thing is the only people claiming this is ironic are a portion of their fanbase (and a lot of the detractors too I suppose) when really this album is pretty genuine, Laura and Dylan have spoken out in interviews that what they're doing has no ironic intentions and when you look into their solo material and individual tastes it's not at all hard to believe

so we all might as well get used to it, right? RIGHT?

honestly now having a hard time understanding their sense of humour in regards to this if said humour isn't ironic humour

I mean it's not at all surprising that this album is the product of people who have a genuine mutual appreciation for scene music, PC Music, dubstep, 3OH!3 and Soulja Boy. That's maybe my favourite aspect of this album honestly, that it takes all these styles of music deemed uncool or tasteless and smashes them together, pushes them to extreme and throws them back in your face. It's like a massive fuck you to the idea of 'good taste'

interviewer: What is the biggest misconception people have about 100 Gecs?

Laura: “That we are deeply ironic people.”

Dylan: “Oh yeah, that’s true. I wouldn’t say we make ironic music.”

Laura: “People think that we’ve staked our entire career on the fact that we can be ironic really well. I’m like: ‘Nobody can do that!’ Who’s a parody artist who makes music similar to ours? You’d be hard-pressed [to find one]. We’re not joking all the time… sometimes. A little bit. We’re having fun — we’re not fucking being ironic.”

Dylan: “We’re seriously having fun.”

Laura: “Really serious fun. Intense fun.”
