Joliette is solid but the dynamics aren't very interesting and the tone is kinda homogenous :[ This is quite a bit stronger in both areas

Woah, no way is Joliette homogeneous, every track has it’s own distinct flavour. That album is full of interesting and well executed ideas. I could see the production being a sticking point for some, but it works, they cross over a lot of ground, so for it to remain cohesive as a whole is an achievement.

This is really good, though it probably isn’t as impressive in terms of ambition and sheer scope.

They’re quite different anyway... I know your weren’t trying to compare them directly, but you sort of ended up doing so.

Oyy, I just love that new Joliete to death. Especially as a native spanish speaker I got a lot out of their energy.

Wow I was sleepy and that was a sketchy take - totally agreed on each track bringing its own flavour and the album covering a range of strong ideas, but the combination of the production, the album's dynamic wavelength (which has a strong skew towards loud and intense) and its general sense of ongoing intensity gives it an oversaturated feel that doesn't allow each of its many strong individual moments to land to its full strength imo. Obviously the two are quite different, but I see them as complementary rather than unrelated when it comes to 2019 hxc, particularly since this album is very well paced and balances dynamics to great effects

Funnily enough, although I can barely understand any of the lyrics on Luz Devora (my Italian doesn't quite stretch to whatever Joliette are saying :[ ) the lyrics on this are mildly grating so Joliette have an edge there through pure benefit of the doubt

@Johnny: I’m not exactly well versed either way (relying on translations), but it didn’t make a massive difference to me. Yeah, it does make that initial connection more difficult though.

This album definitely doesn't do anything different or new, but it does it stunningly well.

Olive Tree is easily the best song of the year for me and the lyrics are great too.

Haven't really gone back to this, though it is a very good album I wouldn't say it has huge staying power.
