Also, you realize that arguing that hating on this and Sempiternal = being consistent actually works against your own argument that people are hating on this because its pop, right?

There Is a Hell was my first BMTH record, I've liked everything onwards although it took a while for me to get on board with Drown and then That's the Spirit. This one was significantly easier for me to get into than TTS was at first, I wasn't expecting a metal album.

Read earlier about people talking about Oli and Jordan’s vocals...this is a good listen in case no one posted it

I'm saying Nocte isn't a fanboy longing for the days of sloppy chugging and repeating "we will never sleep cuz sleep is for the weak," but go on.

Well many people are stuck judging this as a metal album which I get because most of the shit flung at this is a lot like the shit I flung at TTS before I got over the stylistic shift.

Sure, im sure a lot of people are. That aside, this is bad, and not because its not metal.

Well I'm sure there's other reasons to hate it, like:

1) you've listened to it once and not let it sink in

2) you focus WAY too much on the lyrics

3) you're a purist who bashes vocal effects

4) you never liked the band in general (see Nocte)

1) you've listened to it once and not let it sink in

- The good ol' "you haven't REALLY listened to it yet" / "it's a grower" argument. Is every album in existence a grower now?

2) you focus WAY too much on the lyrics

- Depends on the presentation. The memorability of a pop record tends to rely on the memorability/catchy-ness of the beats + lyrics, especially the chorus. A deficiency in one or the other should be noted. Regardless, bad lyrics are bad lyrics.

3) you're a purist who bashes vocal effects

- Vocal effects can be good. But they can also be bad. Simple as that, depends on execution.

4) you never liked the band in general (see Nocte)

- Which is why I won't bother listening to this. But I don't think it's fair to say people hate this because 'muh heavy is gone,' because it's still possible to find fault in this even under different criteria. Approaching it as a pop record can leave the album still appearing poor, and that's just life my friend.

I'm past the point of being embarrassed to listen to certain shit. Honestly if this was released by an unknown band, Sput would dig it.

Deathbat on the verge of sending another thread to the shitter I see....Make it as spicy as the TTTS thread ; )

Nihilist Blues might actually be my favourite song they've done since Crucify Me or Fuck, completely obsessed with it.

EDIT: Yeah I can agree with that Spec, sput would be mad about it because of its eclecticness.

Eh, if people want to enjoy this, feel free, I ain't judging. I'm only judging those that are themselves doing judging. It's a vicious cycle.

BMTH could release something like Jane Doe and get crucified here because of their name.

@Mars: Good response, I'll try to explain as best as I can.

"The good ol' "you haven't REALLY listened to it yet" / "it's a grower" argument. Is every album in existence a grower now?" Well, no. Sometimes albums will click after a while of trying. Usually if it's not the first listen, it's probably the first four or so unless I've already decided it was horrible and it doesn't have a lot of different stuff to offer.

"Depends on the presentation. The memorability of a pop record tends to rely on the memorability/catchy-ness of the beats + lyrics, especially the chorus. A deficiency in one or the other should be noted. Regardless, bad lyrics are bad lyrics."

I mean in all fairness, people take some of Oli's lyricism way too seriously and I don't really critique the quality of his lyricism much anyway.

"Vocal effects can be good. But they can also be bad. Simple as that, depends on execution."

Yeah and I don't even notice the autotune everyone is whining about.

"I don't think it's fair to say people hate this because 'muh heavy is gone,' because it's still possible to find fault in this even under different criteria. Approaching it as a pop record can leave the album still appearing poor, and that's just life my friend." Well in that case there's not much you can do. But it seems the trend is that most of the 1's and 1.5's are from hardcore metalheads so it's usually the first thing I'd turn to for an assumption.

1. 1's are not growers.

2. I can only ignore so much cringe

3. Lmao uhh, i like Animal Collective, Deicide's s/t, Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, etc. I love vocal effects when theyre used right. You dont know shit

4. Actually i did in high school, and even now i dont think most of their discog is that bad. Whats your point anyways, if they made a good album it would be a good album regardless of their history.

I do have to say I hate this "if another band did it" argument. I've seen it crop up a few times now.

The fact is, an album in a discography is a sequel. It lies within the same body of work as the rest of the band. Should this be seen as a pop record? Sure, I can see that line of reasoning. But to complain that people are taking previous albums to contextualize this, both positively and negatively, makes no sense. They released this under their band name, so that's how some will view them. It's not fair to say all other albums should just be sent into oblivion.

If it was released by another band, basically the same faults this may have are still there. There's just a different label on it. If anything, Sput would just pass it up as another random pop album that emerged from the millions of others, and conversation dies there.
